Movie Reviews

Austin Chronicle - 7/10 by Louis BlackSure, we’ve all seen this story before, but that doesn’t hamper this film from being enormously entertaining, with riveting performances, great beats, and poetic rhymes.
Los Angeles Times - 7/10 by Amy NicholsonThe cast keeps us invested in Filly's furious resurrection.
Village Voice - 7/10 by Aaron HillisYoussef Delara and Michael D. Olmos's variation on the too-familiar subgenre (the rising inner-city superstar here is a Latina tomboy) is more heartfelt, humanistic, and entertaining than such a clichéd showbiz cautionary tale has any right to be.
Paste Magazine - 6/10 by Annlee EllingsonThe movie works best as a showcase for Rodriguez, transcending its simplistic script and clichéd plot in snatches -- when its leading lady is at the mike and especially in the film's final awkward family reunion.
TheMovieReport.com - 6/10 by Michael DequinaHowever much earnest commitment and passion that the cast lend to their roles, it ultimately cannot overcome the routine structure and approach to the overall execution.
The Hollywood Reporter - 6/10 by David RooneyA dynamic breakout performance from Gina Rodriguez helps this rap-infused drama about a young Los Angeles Latina overcome its patchy storytelling.
USA Today - 6/10 by Claudia PuigMelodramatic and gritty Filly Brown marks the debut of a magnetic screen presence in Gina Rodriguez, as well as the final performance of singer Jenni Rivera, who died in a plane crash in December.
McClatchy-Tribune News Service - 6/10 by Roger MooreThere’s nothing much new here, but the performances and the milieu make Filly Brown an entertaining, honorable installment in a story that is the American Dream incarnate, and has been ever since the first wannabe showed up on Tin Pan Alley at the beginning of the last century.
Washington Post - 4/10 by Sean O'ConnellA routine music business cautionary tale, the film shuffles its decks ever so slightly by casting a Latino actress as its lead, but doesn't do enough to shed the exasperating confines of the star-is-born genre.
Variety - 3/10 by Robert KoehlerThe resulting film is a trite piece of storytelling, with character development and plot points that feel not so much lived in as borrowed from other movies.
