eFilmCritic.com - 8/10 by Rob GonsalvesI'm glad I bought it, I'm glad I saw it, and I'm glad Solondz moved beyond it.
EmanuelLevy.Com - 7/10 by Emanuel LevyTodd Solondz's feature directing debut is a disappointingly episodic and fragmented tale, containing musical sequences, that owes its existence to the work of Woody Allen.
Reel Film Reviews - 3/10 by David NusairIt's ultimately not difficult to see why Todd Solondz has disowned his first film, Fear Anxiety and Depression...
User Review - 10/10 by Julian ETodd Solondz is now my favorite director. Like his other movies (this being the first full length), It's disturbing and depressing but still ridiculously funny. Even if it's really gloomy and excessive, somehow you manage to laugh at the misfortune. The film also confirmed some thoughts I've been having that me and my friends never discuss. 9/10 but I'm giving it 5 stars.
User Review - 10/10 by Caleb CTodd Solondz's first film feels more like a really demented Woody Allen movie then a Solondz movie, but there are definitely hints of what was to come. Solondz himself, hates the movie, but I'm not Solondz, and I love it.
User Review - 8/10 by Rj BA lost classic. The debut movie by Todd Solondz. I love the character Junk. Sadly, Solondz says this may never be released on DVD.
User Review - 8/10 by Rob Mgreat, simply great. while not solondz finest work this movie impressed me with its fine dialog and great character study. i would not recommend this to someone who's never heard of todd solondz but if your already familiar with the man try and find it.
User Review - 8/10 by Andrew CVHS First Viewing, 5 Solondz films seen If it weren't for Storytelling, I would be much more enthusiastic about director Todd Solondz. Whereas I do not think it is necessarily a bad movie, it is nowhere near as funny/philisophical as his other films - including Fear, Anxiety & Depression, which plays out perfectly as a spoof on Woody Allen. I heard that this film was chopped up quite a bit by the production company. I would be interested to see a director's cut of it, but I was not disappointed with what I saw at all. It was truly hilarious - part slapstick, part musical, and part surreal. Todd Solondz has made two unquestionably great films: Happiness and Palindromes. I also love Welcome to the Dollhouse, but I hope his next films capitalize more on what I love about the aforementioned. He had a little bit of a misfire with Storytelling. I want to see more takes on the American Dream. Happiness has got to be one of the best films to do that. Now that's a film that exposes what people are really like.
User Review - 6/10 by Meagan FWhile Solondz is fine as an actor in this film, I think he does well to limit his input to behind the camera, staving off any possible Woody Allen comparisons. You can see the beginnings of his awkward, embarrassing style in this film, but he makes you uncomfortable in more sophisticated ways in later projects.
User Review - 6/10 by Joseph S"I'm a neat kind of guy"!!!(forgotten great songs of the 80's) Todd Solondz sings the songs you love!...his dirtiest secret (not pedophelia, child abuse, or sexual perversion)...the truth is far more embarrassing and confessional...basically he made a pretty terrible and kinda funny version of "Annie Hall" in the 80's, staring himself in the Allen role, that is, to quote reviews of his play within the film, "pathetically personal and self-conscious". I kinda enjoyed it at parts, not as good as "Welcome To The Dollhouse", had he not gone on to bigger and better things I probably wouldn't have watched this, but since I have I really can't get these songs out of my head. More on this latter...
