User Review - 10/10 by Sarah M"Eye of the Devil" is an intriguing, yet largely unknown horror film from 1966. Sharon Tate shines in her first major film role as a witch named Odile. This amazing film is a must-see for any horror fan!
User Review - 10/10 by Sonya Wgreat movie.. sharon tate is really good although she's not an actress :D
User Review - 10/10 by Dylan WOh shit, this is so great. An obvious forebear of the Omen. This movie was just what I needed. Slow, devils and great new wave british genre film making. It would only seem lightweight and dated if you had no interest in the occult or great film making. Kerr is a shining star, as usual. It reminds me of Incubus and Kubrick films but offers a lot of it's own creepiness.
User Review - 10/10 by mirabella 1An excellent movie with great actors who were at the top of their game. Sharon Tate was a talent on the rise and I wish that she had many more years ahead of her. 5 stars!!!!! George Vreeland Hill
User Review - 10/10 by Chris BA wonderful overlooked gem, Sharon Tate shines in her first onscreen role opposite David Niven.
User Review - 8/10 by Neil ODavid Niven and Deborah Kerr lead this forgotten forgotten Wicker Man-ish horror thriller set in rural France though filmed in England. It also features a veritable roll-call of Brit Horror alumni and half forgotten TV faces. Director Lee J. Thompson's film has some genuinely creepy moments as Kerr uncovers the secret behind husband Niven's sudden trip back to his birthplace, a small French vineyard plagued by a poor grape crop. Particularly effective is a sequence where Kerr is tormented by a group of hooded figures at the grave of Niven's ancestor and pretty much everything involving Tate (looking stunning) and a bow-and-arrow wielding Hemmings as a diabolical sister/brother act. Beautifully filmed in crisp monocrome.
User Review - 8/10 by Nelson CPhilippe is hiding something from his wife Catherine. She's suspicious of his behavior, but is also worried about him. Something is wrong, something awful. Philippe returns to Ballac, his old ancestral home, telling Catherine to stay behind with the children. Of course, she doesn't and takes the children with her to Ballac. According to Philippe their french vineyards are failing which makes itself clear that a sacrifice must be made. Catherine experiences many odd things, mostly from a brother and sister, played by Edward Mulhare and Sharon Tate. The brother uses a bow an arrow to shoot doves and the sister is good at turning toads into birds. Catherine's husband is always stuck in a trance. Even when he crushes a glass with his hand he emits no emotion whatsoever. "Believe it, believe it or leave" he says to his wife. She approaches father Dominic played by Donald Pleasence, asking about what it all means. He too tells her she should leave, but she doesn't care too much about leaving because she chooses not to give up on her husband. Ballac has for years dealed with many ancient traditions. I assume one of those traditions is archery. The two children spend much of their time with the brother and sister. Even playing on the roof top where Catherine confronts the sister, but is hypnotized by the necklace she wears. The sister nearly sends Catherine off the roof, luckily it wasn't all the way. The sister is whipped by Philippe for trying to kill his wife. "You're mad, Philippe. You're all mad." She tells him. Over the years, Philippe's ancestors have all been killed in mysterious ways. This frightens Catherine, but she still will not leave for Philippe's sake. Something about Philippe just makes her feel calm. She feels he will not hurt her. When Catherine visits the grave of one of Philippe's ancestors she discovers several people dressed in long dark hooded clothing. Are they ghosts? spirits? What does it all mean?! It means that it is Philippe who is the one, not Catherine. In the midst of 12 apostles there were 13, Philippe is the 13th. 12 Dance while the 13th sacrifices himself. A blood sacrifice. Catherine will not let it happen! "But you're sacrificing yourself for nothing!" Catherine says. An unnerving and creepy cult film with a great performance from Kerr and from Niven. Oh, and let's never forget the beautiful Sharon Tate in one of her first performances. She is so lovely in black and white. The ending is shocking because you have to remember that the blood of the Montfaucon didn't end with just Philippe. He also had two children and one of them being a son.
User Review - 8/10 by Trent RUnder-rated horror fun, with a Gothic and Euro-horror sensibility which may have seemed out of place at the time of release. Similarly, it features Tate and Hemmings as characters who behave in a ritualized and possibly drugged and hypnotic manner - which at first seems like simple terrible acting. Both would go on to have small but key (and tragic) impacts in horror, and it is interesting to see them here supporting such a great cast. Niven is tormented, but given to flagellating others rather than himself, and Pleasence is hilarious - sporting a funky mitre. Kerr makes a wonderfully clever and resourceful protagonist, and it is great to see a gender reversal in horror films regarding fear of the Old World infiltrating the contemporary. Hillier's cinematography is nothing short of spectacular, panning past close-ups to sweep into castle vistas and then cut to foreground action. This holds up to repeat viewings, despite the somewhat unremarkable plot. The visual elements, cast, and curious place in cinema history make it a repeat watch.
User Review - 8/10 by David SExtremely entreging. The story is so intellegent and suspenceful. Sharon Tate is beautiful and talented; it's a shame of what happend to her, she could have been a huge star. Deborah Kerr is marvalous as always; I get sad when I see her now because of her recent death.
User Review - 8/10 by Julia MI like this movie. It has a lot of famous folks in it: Deborah Kerr, David Niven, David Hemmings (Blow Up), a young Donald Pleasence (Halloween, THX-1138), and, of course, Sharon Tate, acting well in a role as an occult witch. The movie is good black & white atmospheric gothic thriller, with hints of Wicker Man-type stuff. Lots of scenes of black robed black magicians prowling forests outside castles. Interesting camera work on some scenes. Tate looks great; I think her voice was dubbed but some say it wasn't.
