User ReviewCJ Cpossibly my favorite Franco film. Great score by Bruno Nicholi. Exellent photography. And some people call Franco a hack! HA!
User ReviewCarlos LOne of Franco's best directed movies. Poetic and stylish adaptation of De Sade's work. The acting is excellent. Both Maria Rohm and Marie Liljedahl are stunning beauties and talented actresses. The score by Maestro Bruno Nicolai is wonderful. There's even a Christopher Lee cameo somewhere! hehe. What else can I say? Check it out! One of Franco's best
User ReviewPavandeep SOne of my favourites of Franco's work. The downfall of a young and pure girl into degenracy is explored beautifully here, her youth and innocence a flaw in this story and her trust mislead and her discovery both splendid and cruel.
User ReviewAnders JFranco's Eugenie, an adaptation of Sade's Philosophy in the Bedroom, is a highly entertaining film, but for select tastes. It's along the lines of Vadim's Liaisons danereuses adaptation in that it updates the 18th century setting to the mod '60s, with great clothes and set pieces and Bruno Nicolai's awesome noise-sleaze-jazz soundtrack. He also made another film in 1970 which confusingly goes under the name Eugenie de Sade, an adaption of Eugenie de Franval, which is also good but much creepier and more depressing.
User ReviewBrian FDark, sexy drama based on de Sade's "Philosophy in the Boudiar."
User ReviewMark PApparently this is NOT the same thing as Eugenie De Sade with Soledad Miranda, also by Franco. I haven't seen that one yet, but I can imagine they're quite similar. This is a really fucking cool artsy erotic horror film (this guy's specialty) loosely inspired by Marquis de Sade's Philosophy in the Boudoir.. Basically an ultra innocent girl gets tempted by the world of sadistic kinky sex or some shit like that, and goes to stay on an island where she'll be "tought" by some woman her dad is having an affair with. Of course, she doesn't really know what she's getting herself into, so she gets drugged and raped, flogged by maces and chains, witnesses a woman having sex with her brother, and other crap of that sort, and somehow still manages to remain convinced that it was "all a dream" until almost the very end. The coolest thing about this one is that the guy's usual cinematic techniques work REALLY well here, especially the awesome lighting (how cool is that bright red room!) and that really voyeuristic thing he always does where the camera zooms in really close and goes in and out of focus, makes for a nicely hazy and surreal experience. Plus there's some pretty nice use of de Sade's philosophy, to show that he isn't just throwing in the reference just for the hell of it. Also check out Christopher Lee as the sinister as fuck leader of a de Sade worshipping cult! I really dug this one.
User ReviewIvy KSoftcore at it's finest. Combining bdsm elements with a sensational 70's charm, De Sade's influences takes us into a delightful torture chamber of terror. In this instance it's an island oasis hiding secrets of sexual extremes. Christopher Lee shines in a perfect De Sadesque performance and Jess Franco is a genius when placing nudity on film. Highly recommended.
User ReviewDan GBeautifully lit soft erotic S/M movie that leaves the action to the imagination where these kind of fantasies should be. Not a movie for the purest of white souls but for those who knows what darkness and obsessions that lies in the heart of men and women this is a treat.
User ReviewMartin CAdaptation of Sade's Philosophy in the Bedroom. Stylish soft erotic film from Jess Franco..The film is meybe rubbish but i have seen little Franco to compare it too... 3 stars..for now!....
User ReviewSean CAnother one of Jess Franco adaptations of Marquis De Sade. This one is of Philosophy in the Boudoir. It isn't that explicit, given the source material or the rating the film has. It is pretty entertaining though. Great narration by Christopher Lee. He apparently worked for only 2 days and didn't know any of the shots that were cut into his scenes would be there.
