His mother left after divorcing his strict father, businessman Jan van Haalen, who ignores the link when he starts a hot affair with Mia and refuses to help Mathijs financially so he can keep the houseboat he lives on with his girl and study puppeteering, which Mia supports, hence suggests he legally claims alimony from Jan, whose lawyer is also charged with enforcing the donation non-disclosure clause when he hears Mathijs's other mother turned up.
