Leave your thoughts about Dr. Black, Mr. Hyde.
Commercial Appeal (Memphis, TN)John BeifussIntriguing and entertaining, the film suggests -- visually and thematically, if not in so many words -- that being white causes a person to become aggressive, brutal and evil, and that the very state of whiteness is a state of corruption.
Movie MetropolisJohn J. PuccioNot as good as you'd like but not as bad as you'd think.
User ReviewTom BStaring Bernie Casey, Dr. Back and Mr. Hyde is a classic it's so bad it's good movie.
User ReviewSean NDr Black Mr Hyde (William Crain 1976) 'A screamin' demon rages inside, turnin' him into Mr Hyde... don't give him no sass or he'll kick yo' ass!' The great Bernie Casey stars as Dr Pride who is trying to find a cure of sclerosis of the liver. Unfortunately he makes the age old mistake of trying a serum on himself... As one of the cops puts it "He's a haint - a cross between the abominable snowman and Willy the werewolf!". Its played pretty straight and is certainly on a level with the Blacula films. The fx are by a young Stan Winston and pretty good for the time. Its unfortunate that Hyde looks like a black albino as the other guys don't seem to notice and just think of him as a white guy. There's lots of subtext about drugs and prostitution but eventually its a tribute to the good old monster movie with an ending appropriate for the genre. Worth it just for Casey alone. A good one!
User ReviewMalaika KI guess I'm a fan of blaxploitation movies!
User ReviewBrad GActually quite good. Packed full of interesting social commentary, and made watchable with good performances all round. Even the make-up effects aren't awful.
User ReviewMatthew CVery low budget, and not really especially good, this movie is made surprisingly entertaining by an excellent cast, especially the always awesome Bernie Casey. For whatever reason, the mix of horror and Blaxploitation never really worked. Like Blacula and others, this is worth watching, but not a particularly good film.
User ReviewSenor CThe few people who have seen this on Flixster seem a bit disappointed that it's not more camp then it is. Although a little more somber for a blaxploitation/horror of this ink it's still has a funny jive to it & is good enough for me to rank it about 4th in the genre. It has something that Blacula & Sugar Hill don't have & that's a rich R rating. Should actually be called Dr Black & Mr White because when Bernie Casey takes his formula it turns him into an albino fiend. Don't know if that is a comment from the black film makers here but it still is fun even if it isn't funky
User ReviewJoe AThis variation on the Robert Louis Stevenson story had a sympathetic lead that was trying to find a cure for a liver disease and volunteers to work in a Free Clinic.
User ReviewBill BMarking yet another Blaxploitation title off the list, this one being a good amount of fun and paying off that catchy trailer that I'd been familiar with for a couple years now. Worth a rental.
