Austin ChronicleRichard WhittakerMcAulay has crafted a terse, bleak drama. It's reminiscent of the portrait of a corrupt male friendship in Super Dark Times, but with the added pressures of kinship and family. To describe Don't Tell a Soul as a story of toxic masculinity is both accurate but, in a time when every film with a flawed or unpleasant male an/protagonist gets that tag, almost glib. There's something rancid between the boys.
RogerEbert.comSimon AbramsAn ambitious black comedy that never goes far enough.
Film ThreatAlex SavelievThe notion of exploring how a young boy views the world through his manipulative older sibling’s eyes – and how poverty affects that developing worldview – is not a bad one. It’s just delivered haphazardly. I applaud McAulay’s efforts, but Don’t Tell a Soul is at its best when it’s simply having fun as a silly B-flick. Shut your brain off, enjoy – and, like with any guilty pleasure, don’t tell a soul you liked it.
The New York TimesGlenn KennyA plot twist saves (that might not be the word for it) Don’t Tell a Soul from being absolutely oppressive, merely by injecting a scintilla of “what happens next” appeal — and letting the always-interesting Wilson stretch a bit.
User ReviewOrukayuA dramatic thriller from 2021. It is a showdown movie between the tough-tempered elder brother at the age of 17 and the younger brother who is less than 15 years old and oppressed. Children have mothers with cancer and unable to move. The younger brother steals money from a house by being told it is for his mother. While walking on the road, a security guard appears in front of them. They start to run away and the man starts chasing. Then the man falls into a deep well in the forest area. Over time, the big one gets more and more tyrannical. The little one succumbs to his conscience. The movie is an average movie. It's annoying when you watch it. No nudity or sexuality. Family can watch.
User ReviewJLuis_001Too contrived for such a simple premise. It's bleak yes, but goes absolutely nowhere, especially with that hollow ending. Family therapy would have been more practical.
