The beautiful Carmela Tozzi is laid out in the cisterns deep below the Palazzo Ducale: her eyes glued with tree wax, a Bible on her chest and the traces of a rape on her thighs. Everything points to ritual murder and requires a skilled investigator. Because all the commissioners are sick, Rossi is forced to solve this scary case. His vain superior Commander Nevio Cottelli and the unscrupulous Vice Mayor Enrico Manchetti do not make it easy for him. Both want someone to blame quickly, so they push for them The frightened fruit dealer Ciro, for whom the dead woman worked, is arrested.
