Leave your thoughts about Deal of the Century.
Journal and Courier (Lafayette, IN)Bob BloomA bomb should have wiped out all the prints of this loser.
Chicago Sun-TimesRoger EbertBy the evidence, Deal of the Century seems to have had one of two problems. Either it was filmed without a finished script, or it was originally a lot longer, and this is a version without some crucial narrative links.
DVDTalk.comScott WeinbergI would have been thrilled to revisit this one and walk away calling it "sadly misunderstood" or "seriously underrated," but the thing's an absolute mess from stem to stern.
User ReviewAdam BSo under rated. If you can find it anywhere to rent it's a miracle. It's not that expensive to buy and it's well worth it. You have to really pay attention to absorb the humour as it does have some dark war/weapons/power themes. I guess that's what makes the light parts so funny. Gregory Hines is classic, it's a shame he's no longer with us.
User ReviewDave Rdefinitely an underrated film. it's a dark comedy but it paints a scarily real portrait of arms dealing... while the movie deals with latin america and the communist threat of the 1980's it makes you wonder if this is the sort of thing going on in africa now... definitely worth a look.
User ReviewTTT C(** 1/2): Thumbs Down This movie almost works but it is just too silly at times. A near-miss.
User ReviewJeremy SFunny movie with a great idea in the height of the arms dealings in real life that would follow in about 3 years.
User ReviewBrad WGreat idea; so-so execution. Needed a script polish, better production and someone to replace Chase. An actor with comic sensibilities instead of a comic that thinks he can act.
User ReviewPaul CA war satire that Chase and Weaver can't save from failing.
User ReviewJames H41/100. Disappointing misfire, too bad, it has a terrific cast. Sigourney Weaver is the only bright spot in this movie however. It's just not that funny, it's pacing is very uneven, as are the laughs. It's not without a few good scenes, but as a whole it just doesn't work. It could have been a funny and biting satire, but is instead an oafish slapstick comedy with extreme characters and situations.
