Paste MagazineNatalia KeoganWhat could have been a cogent critique of the parasitic nature between the uber-wealthy and the labor they exploit is instead an overly muted (and eventually weakly meta) version of a tale that’s been told a thousand times before.
The GuardianCath ClarkeDirector David Verbeek’s script doesn’t quite wield the scalpel with enough sadistic glee. Instead, this film feels ever-so-slightly sluggish and dour in places.
VarietyRichard KuipersA middling horror-thriller and social satire that opens with an intriguing premise but never probes its cashed-up characters deeply enough to create gripping drama from the heightened hedonism or existential crises they experience after acquiring new powers.
RogerEbert.comMonica CastilloThere are some fun ideas and moments in Dead & Beautiful, but Verbeek seems to want to avoid offending anyone with the suggestion that the rich are vampires—which is the premise his movie is built on.
Austin ChronicleJenny NulfThere’s a hollowness to its beauty, as much as there is with its messaging.
User ReviewJLuis_001Most of the time when films like this one attempt to disguise the emptiness of their plot with the famous style over substance, you know that most of those times it will fail. If you are more focused on looking good than telling a good story, then you are wasting the audience's time. But does it really matter once you get into it? No, it really doesn't. When the premise is about trying to make you care about such vacuous characters who are nothing more than spoiled rich kids who are also vampires, you really think you're telling a meaningful story? This idea may have worked if the approach had been different, but like the disastrous Night Teeth which has a plot that shares certain similar traits, this is aimed at an audience they hope to entertain with a cheap gimmick because sadly they know they're going to succeed.
