Acting upon an opportunity, Jory is able to escape, the correct belief by Tunner being that he headed "home" to Chatsburg Parish in the Louisiana bayou country to reunite with his wife. Tunner not only has Jory to contend with, but other inherent hazards of the unfamiliar swamps including the locals who will protect their own. What happens between the two men may be affected by the mutual admiration and respect each has for the other, Tunner's arguably more than he has for those on "his side", including his golf obsessed boss, Bradville's Warden Keeley, Chatsburg's somewhat lethargic Sheriff Brown, and Tunner's underling Sgt. Goodwin, who is open that he is waiting for Tunner to make a mistake to assume his job.
