Movie Reviews

Film Threat - 10/10 by Chuck FosterBlends the uncanny staging of home movies with a French New Wave perspective on iconography and metaphors.
Not Coming to a Theater Near You - 8/10 by Rumsey TaylorIt is style, glamour, and even virtuosic direction (in the inclusive use of so many familiar techniques) that paves Sweetback's value as a timepiece - its lasting, testimonial contribution is its position as the first of its kind.
Time - 8/10 by Richard CorlissWithout question or competition, the most influential movie by a black filmmaker.
Rolling Stone - 8/10 by David FearIt's a revolutionary movie in more ways than one.
The New York Times - 5/10 by Stephen HoldenIf Sweet Sweetback is unforgettable, it is also deeply flawed. The acting is mediocre at best. And in depicting women as grotesque, flailing sex machines serviced by the indifferent stud hero, it matches today's gangsta rap in arrogant misogyny.
Filmcritic.com - 4/10 by Christopher NullMelvin van Peebles' blaxploitation 'classic' still doesn't fare well by either artistic standards or simple good taste, but any student of the genre is well advised to check it out.
Chicago Reader - 4/10 by Dave KehrA shrewd and powerful mix of commercial ingredients and ideological intent.
Film Inquiry - 3/10 by Lee JuttonThat a film released in 1971 remains accurate in its portrayal of the way the black community is persecuted by police in America in 2018 gives the film an added emotional heft.
Slant Magazine - 3/10 by Clayton DillardOver 40 years after its release, Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song still retains its shock value, but even more so, it remains distinct as a work that cannot be squarely placed within a singular category.
Village Voice - 3/10 by Michael KerbelThe first black director to break into commercial cinema, Van Peebles obviously feels deeply about black oppression. But he has chosen, paradoxically, to make the kinds of unrealistic films for which blacks have justly criticized white film-makers.
