Chicago ReaderDon DrukerJack Starrett's 1973 entry in the violent inner-city drug-bust genre is talkier and more subdued than the usual fare, with a surer technical polish.
EmpireKim NewmanA demented slice of widescreen right-on action-funk from the blaxsploitation era.
The New York TimesVincent CanbyThe movie seems to want to be a James Bond sort of adventure in black drag, but it's more reminiscent of Batman.
Chicago Sun-TimesRoger EbertThe movie is put together in a sort of disjointed way; there are too many characters, and some of them disappear for so long, we forget them. But that doesn't matter much; the idea is to string together scenes that entertain, and Cleopatra Jones does that nicely.
East Bay ExpressKelly VanceSix-foot-two-inch onetime fashion model Tamara Dobson isn't quite in the same category as Pam Grier, but on the strength of this she has to rank right up there.
User ReviewJodine MThis was well written, funny, and action packed! Best blaxploitation movie ever!
User ReviewFrog B"Cleopatra Jones" is one of the most action packed "Blaxploitation" films I have ever seen, not to mention well written in terms of dialogue, and well acted. The movie focuses on a secret agent by the same name, played by Tamara Dobson, who is assigned to eliminate drug traffickers. After she is sent to destroy a poppy field in Turkey, a drug-lord by the name of Mommy, played by Shelley Winters, seeks to put an end to Cleopatra. I love Shelley Winters in this movie, she is such a drama queen. To watch her throw a fit in just about every scene is just hilarious. In many "Blaxploitation" movies much of the dialogue is spent on showing the "blackness" of the individuals and the acting is usually slightly over the top to also emphasize this point. While I certainly understand as to where these movies are coming from and I do appreciate it to some degree, I feel that there is sometimes too much emphasis put on this point and it tends to slow down the stories. "Cleopatra Jones" on the other hand does not drag the story. Though it be a simple, cheesy one, it focuses on the plot and flows very nicely. All and all, it is a great movie. Go rent it, go buy it.
User ReviewPaulette NTamara Dobson was the personification of cool and strength. Where else could you see an African-American female portray a spy on screen. The former model was classy and fashionable on screen. her costumes were always incredible.
User Reviewkim sThis was a tall chick that could kick ass in heels and dress her ass off
User Reviewdee dTamara Jones passed away late last year (2006) but her work as a black female hero lives on. This is a good late night or Sunday afternoon flick.
