In the middle of the night, retired police chief Richard Linville is roused from his sleep. A hooded man has broken into his house: he is torturing Linville to death. Only a little later his daughter, the London Scotland Yard official Kate, arrives - not only to organize the funeral of her honored father, but also to do her own research. Local Police Chief Caleb Hale, who is actually stuck, doesn't like this. Under pressure from Kate, Caleb's assistant Jane soon comes across a prime suspect: the psychopathic violent criminal Denis Shove, who threatened Richard when he was convicted. Now he is at large again and has disappeared with his girlfriend. As more crimes ensue, Kate is confronted with a dark secret from her father that collapses her ideal of Richard. The city investigator relentlessly drives her ailing colleague Caleb, who forbids any interference, in front of her - and almost to despair. Meanwhile, the manhunt triggers a short-circuit reaction in Denis: He brings a family into his power in a lonely cottage and shoots his father Jonas Crane in a life-threatening manner. While Kate and Caleb focus on their new lead, Stella Crane and her young son desperately hope for help.
