With minimal narration by the director and very little context this is a kaleidoscope of stunning visuals from Calcutta, a city of 8,000,000 in the late 1960's: rich and poor, exotic and mundane, secular and religious, children and adults, animate and inanimate. Given only the images, the viewer can read any meaning she or he wants into the film.... (Full plot summary below)

Ozus' World Movie Reviews - 6/10 by Dennis SchwartzOffers a snapshot of life in such a teeming and complex city.
User Review - 8/10 by Adam SEdited together after the realization that there wasn't enough room in the epic 'Phantom India' series for all of the 'Calcutta' footage he wanted to use, Malle's 'Calcutta' is a stand-alone piece of artistic documentary. Malle's camera lingers on street performers and slum kids, while his voiceover damns the caste system that propagates the city's vile poverty. A brilliant portrait of humanity, refusing to give up.
User Review - 6/10 by Dan KLouis Malle's "Calcutta" was released separately from his "Phantom India", it was shot at the same time during his excursion with the documentary crew, yet it was released separately since Malle thought Calcutta had so much more. True, but I felt "Calcutta" lacked the construction of the "Phantom India" series and I felt the expansion of a 60 minute episode to a 99 minute feature was not as good as it could have been. Oh well. Still an essential part of Malle's India documentaries.
User Review - 6/10 by Memo PMalle's documentary focuses on appalling living conditions and social unrest in Calcutta. Having seen umpteen Ray and Ghatak movies, little of this was new to me, but it was still interesting (and quite depressing). But the French are sometimes insufferably eager to point fingers. I'm not one of these "freedom fries" Americans that hates the French. But really, don't they have enough colonial problems in their own past that they don't have to go "tsk tsk"-ing the English over India?
