Chicago TribuneGene SiskelThe action sequences are what the film is all about, and these are remarkably well done, including a climactic, largely bloodless shootout among helicopters and jet fighters over Los Angeles.
Reno Gazette-JournalForrest HartmanI've always had a weakness for Blue Thunder, which seemed terribly exciting during my teen years. More than two decades later, I can admit that it's not a great picture. But I still like it.
Washington PostRita KempleyBlue Thunder hovers just this side of trash and the other side of credibility, but it propels a willing audience into adrenaline heaven.
Mania.comRob VauxThe battle in Blue Thunder is less between Scheider's edgy police pilot Frank Murphy and his ultimate nemesis (Malcom McDowell), as it is between Murphy and the high-tech beast he's asked to pilot.
Fantastica DailyChuck O'LearyDespite some big lapses in logic, Blue Thunder is a thrilling action-adventure with a smart, cynical attitude and a villain (Malcolm McDowell) you'll just love to hate.
Movie MetropolisJames PlathAs a cop-action flick this isn't bad, but it fits the mold so thoroughly that it feels more familiar than it should.
EmpireWilliam ThomasThe script self-destructs, but the performances — including Daniel Stern as an expendable sidekick — are fun, and John Badham stages some super stunts with the insectile title machine.
Ozus' World Movie ReviewsDennis SchwartzThis police thriller is an incoherent mess, playing out as a government conspiracy themed techno-thriller obsessed over technology.
The Globe and Mail (Toronto)Matthew FraserThe opposition of good and evil is devoid of any subtle shading, so just sit back and enjoy the spectacular dogfight over downtown Los Angeles.
User ReviewJim SI really do have an attraction to this movie. I usually see it once every 1 or 2 years. The movie is fast and does not go too deep in the issues, but that is why I like it. It gets in fast and next thing you know it is over. Not one of those movies where halfway it loses your attention. What I really like is that the Blue Thunder helicopter is believable. I would fear if they re made it today it would be so spaceship like and all cgi. like the plane in Stealth. This is well worth a watch.
