New York TimesNathan LeeAs much a work of sculpture as of cinema, this 71-minute movie, 13 years in the making, is the handmade brainchild of Christiane Cegavske, an artist who dabbles in film but whose talents and sensibility align more naturally with those of the contemporary-art world.
TV Guide MagazineMaitland McDonaghDespite the absence of dialogue -- the mice squeak and the oak creatures caw like ravens -- Cegavske imbues her scrappy little creatures with disturbingly complex personalities. And if the tale's moral is less than clear, its haunting images speak directly to some dark, preverbal corner of the heart.
Los Angeles CityBeatAndy Klein...utterly idiosyncratic, in the best sense of the word. ... Very trippy and sometimes strangely disturbing, this is a quintessential midnight movie.
New York PostV.A. MusettoAn original head trip definitely not recommended for kiddies.
VarietyDennis HarveyOften grotesque, though never in the "Sick and Twisted" juvenile gross-out mode, dreamlike feature is as lovingly crafted as it is unsettlingly sour-sweet, with Mark Growden's avant-garde folk score in perfect synch.
Film ThreatFelix Vasquez Jr.Cegavske's film is a meld of surreal imagery, and a morbid somewhat horrific story that art lovers will enjoy. Horror fans need apply.
Village VoiceR. Emmett SweeneyA sickly-sweet stop-motion animation 13 years in the making, Blood Tea and Red String is a genuine piece of outsider art.
User ReviewDane PI wish this would become as popular as 'Nightmare Before Christmas' or 'Corpse Bride.' Track it down by any means possible.
User ReviewR.John XMarvelous stop motion animated film. Besides having the cutest upper crust mouse fight ever filmed, the rest of the movie is filled with memorable characters, witty inventions, and a complete surrealist landscape. The character design is fantastic, the puppets manage to convey so much individuality and expression without a single intelligible word. The story is one of creation and loss and dangerous consumption. The poetry of the animation is such that I felt as if I were inside a picture book or complicated miniature painting hung in some poorly lit corner of a foreign museum. The awe of discovery was only overshadowed by the pleasure of immersion. Seriously great stuff!
