Matthew is married to Karen, and father to teenaged daughter, Nikki. Victor, his colleague and best friend, who is going through a divorce, is father to 17-year-old Jennifer. Matthew's marriage is not going well as well. Just before they are to embark for a trip to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Karen says she is going on vacation by herself to "think about everything." Matthew and Victor decide to go to Rio with their daughters. The magical atmosphere of Rio, as if saturated with eroticism and languid lusts, takes them by surprise. Victor hunts for every woman, and Matthew, faithful to his wife, modestly accompanies his daughter in her entertainment. But the exciting Brazilian rhythms and frank dances on the moonlit beach do their job. Unable to resist the relentless onslaught of the young seducer, Matthew enters into an intimate relationship with her. Victor is furious when he finds out about an "older man" in his daughter's life, and sets out to hunt him down with the aid of Matthew.

The Globe and Mail (Toronto)Stephen GodfreyCentral premise of a secret romance between Michael Caine and the love-smitten daughter of his best friend (Joe Bologna) while the trio vacations together in torrid Rio may be adventurous comedy. Zany comedic conflict, however, is offputting, even at times nasty, in this essentially dead-ahead comedy that sacrifices charm and a light touch for too much realism.
Chicago Sun-TimesRoger EbertBlame It On Rio has the mind of a 1940s bongo comedy and the heart of a porno film. It's really unsettling to see how casually this movie takes a serious situation. A disturbed girl is using sex to play mind games with a middle-aged man, and the movie get its yuks with slapstick scenes where one guy goes out the window when the other guy comes in the door. What's shocking is how many first-rate talents are associated with this sleaze.
Miami HeraldBill CosfordBlame It On Rio turns into a most uncomfortable film, leeringly depicting an affair with decidely icky undertones of incest and pedophilia. Between gratuitous (if titillating) nude scenes and a succession of lame soundtrack songs, there are plenty of travelogue shots to pad out the thin narrative line. Caine looks embarrassed through the entire film, as well he might.
Film4Film4 StaffThe script is too self-consciously coy to carry conviction and appears to have been commandeered from a small screen sit com.
New York TimesVincent CanbyBlame It on Rio is not simply humorless. It also spreads gloom.
Washington PostRita KempleyBlame It on Rio, ha. Rio is innocent. Let's put the blame on executive producer Gelbart along with Caine and Bologna. Unlike the starlettes they've taken in tow, these three guys are old enough to know better.
The New YorkerPauline KaelThough the scenery can't be faulted, there's not a single funny or surprising moment in the movie. However, Blame It on Rio is not simply humorless. It also spreads gloom. It's one of those unfortunate projects that somehow suggests that everyone connected with the movie hated it and all of the other people involved.
User ReviewRic SFUNNY, FUNNY, FUNNY. If you are a mindless, uneducated prude you will dislike this movie. If you enjoy laughing and you are not a "politically correct" moron you will be glad you saw this movie.
User Reviewmeitgol1Saw this movie in 1984 as a teenager and loved it. Still watch it now in my 50's anytime it's on one of the premium movie channels I subscribe to. Movie is fun and is not done in poor taste. Disregard the stuffed shirt professional critics reviews. Joseph Bologna was very funny as usual, and a typical well acted performance by Michael Caine. All the main characters were very good. Movie had a nice pace, and lot's of beautiful scenery. While the subject material is slightly risque, it's nothing to be concerned about. If your looking for a fun movie with kind of love story vibe and no shooting or killings, this one works out nicely.
User ReviewJames RA perfect comedy-a gem from the '80s. Michael Caine is the king.
