User Review - 8/10 by Shashia GA lot of people apparently watched this film for an actor. I watched it because it's a Korean Historical film with sword fights and I wasn't disappointed. It's very sad and romantic [I don't mean that in a quivering lovelove kind of way]. Hwang was hands down my favorite character. Eccentric badasses are always a good addition.
User Review - 6/10 by Mikko RQuestion: Why was every blind Asian man back in history an awesome sword fighter? Lets check out the list: There's Zatoichi (Japan), Blind Fury (Rutger Hauer, Vietnam), House of Flying Daggers (Blindfolded, Chinese) and now Blades of Blood (Korean). Imagine, if they could "kick so much a$$ blind" what could they have done with sight?! A period piece, Blades of Blood is a movie that takes place during the Chosun Dynasty. A rather disjointed film overall, the storyline revolves around one faction fighting with another faction only for everyone to lose to the third party invading Japanese in the end. A rather pointless movie, the film focused upon the conflicts and futile in-fighting of the Korean people. While overall acting in the movie was acceptable, the fight sequences, and scenic shots were probably the highlights of this film. Editing however was sub-par with sudden cuts and pieces that created an uneven flow. Moreover, the weak screenplay and lack of character developments did not help to better this film either. Nevertheless, this movie is only recommended for viewing as a secondary choice or if you really like period piece movies with sword fighting. (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon this movie is not.) Otherwise, I'd pass on this film for Shadowless Sword which had a better storyline, better actions sequences, and better looking actors.
User Review - 6/10 by Peter WAlright Korean historical fiction swordfighting flick. It has a cool blind master character.
User Review - 6/10 by Niklas SNot the best one in the genre, but still enjoyable. Let's say a Korean mix of _Zatoichi_ and _House of the Flying Daggers_.
User Review - 6/10 by Jim MKorea. 1592: A newly unified Japan is preparing to invade Korea. In Seoul the weak leadership of King Seonjo of the Chosun Dynasty leeaves the country valunerable well the East and West Chambers of the Royal Court squabble for power. Labeled a traitor and weary of political ingfighting Lee Mong-Hak (Seung-won Cha) begins a revolt looking to seize the throne for himself before facing down the Japanese. But as Mong-Hak and his Grand Alliance drift further from their founfding principals he leaves enemies in his wake notably Blind Swordsman Hwang Jeong-Hak (Jeong-min Hwang) and the bastard son of a nobleman Gyeon-Ja (Seong-hyeon Baek), and leading hiscountry on the road to ruin. Ok martial arts film from Korea let down by the fact that I know sweet fuck all about Korean history prior to the 20th Centuary. Has some deceint sword fights not overburdened with CGI. There's the usual martial arts philoosphizing one expects from an Asian film. Actors do a decient job but the emotional high points failed to resonate. Check it out if your into Asian or Martial Arts films if not don't waist your time. Historical Note. The Seven Years War or Imjin War (1592-1598) was fought between Japan under Toyotomi Hideyoshi attemping to create an empire that spand Asia begin a war of conquest with Korea the first target to be followed by China and the Spanish possesions in the Pacific. Despite intial success in Korea the war bogged down thanks to Korean Admiral Yi Sun-sin and guerrilla actions by the Koreans. Chinese intervened on Korea's side and the war stalemated and eventually ended in 1598 with Toyotomi's death having bankrupted the nation. The war convinced both Korea and Japan to adopt harsh isolasonist policies and ended Japans dreams of Empire until the late 19th early 20th centuary. In terms of damage the war was on of the worst in Korean history surpassing even the Korean War (1950-1953).
User Review - 6/10 by Justin MKorean historical action movie that can't decide weather to be a samurai movie or a wu xia, but being neither comes off as pretty weak tea. Also, I was not that into any of the main characters, except for Cha Seung-weon as Lee Mong-Hak, whose a good villain. Mostly, it's a lot of silly hats...
User Review - 6/10 by Adriano BThis somewhat leaden paced period drama resembles more western historical kolossal than wuxia - not always in a bad way: yes, it drags often, and yes, is a two-and-a-half man prolonged joke, but it shows what seems the fundamental Korean politic certainty: "No matter what, we are doomed".
User Review - 6/10 by Yvan CKorea may not be as well know for its period swordsman films like Japan, Hong Kong & China but Blades Of Blood will certainly help them out.
User Review - 6/10 by Chris GI liked this film a lot. Humour runs through every scene. If your new to Asian cinema this is the kind of movie you could start with. Action, comedy and nothing too heavy or quick to deal with. Now go get a copy from somewhere.
User Review - 6/10 by Tom DEntertaining enough, but the action is only average and while the political issues are there they are not well brough out.
