Lurking in the shadows of the Internet, a faceless modern-day bogeyman has attracted the attention and fear of a young generation who whisper his name online. Slenderman lives on the dark pages of the web, where impressionable youth create and cultivate his mythos in message boards, YouTube clips and various other digital incantations. But the online fairy tale becomes a shocking real-life horror as two 12-year-old girls, guided by their devotion to Slenderman, lure their friend into the woods to attempt a seemingly inexplicable, brutal murder. From the depths of one the Internet's most unsettling creations to the court case that must consider the consequences, Beware the Slenderman brings to light questions of accountability in an age where young, growing minds are only a few clicks away from creating and consuming something that may influence them to commit unspeakable crimes.

Movie Reviews

Willamette Week - 9/10 by Zach MiddletonWhat may be the spookiest insight of Beware the Slenderman isn't the storybook monster, or the disturbed children, but the potential for hellish internet phenomena to climb out of the monitor and into the world.
Bloody Disgusting - 8/10 by Trace ThurmanA truly terrifying look at the influence the internet can have on today's youth.
Vice - 8/10 by Pilot ViruetWhat's notable about Beware the Slenderman is that it doesn't turn into exploitative, sensational fare, instead presenting the facts in such a calm, simplistic way that the end result mirrors a chilling horror film.
Junkee - 8/10 by Brodie LancasterDespite the terrifying and gruesome subject matter, Beware the Slenderman is a documentary that fails to spook or even chill.
Brooklyn Magazine - 7/10 by Henry StewartAt its most absorbing at its most sensational, but its moral is less outrageous than its details.
Toronto Star - 7/10 by Johanna SchnellerHarnessing the simplicity and reach of the Internet is an appropriate technique for this doc, because it's about just that. But using Skype is also a genius tip for any doc maker on a budget. Which is every doc maker.
The Daily Dot - 6/10 by Michelle JaworskiDirector Irene Taylor Brodsky dives into the origins of the internet myth, and gives a nuanced look into Geyser and Weier's ongoing case with her documentary.
Refinery29 - 5/10 by Morgan BailaTheir sincerity chilled me to the core, maybe because they are so invested in something that is not real.
The Stranger (Seattle, WA) - 5/10 by Megan BurbankIf you are a true-crime freak like me, you'll devour HBO's Beware the Slenderman.
Cinema Movil - 5/10 by Fernando Santoyo TelloThe end result couldn't be more different than the horror film that the trailer promises. [Full review in Spanish]
