In a series of interviews with townspeople, mixed with flashbacks, we follow Bernie: he arrives in Carthage, Texas (pop. 7,000), where old ladies adore him; he befriends a wealthy, mean-spirited widow named Marjorie Nugent; they become companions in both daily routines and expensive vacations. Among those interviewed, only her stockbroker and Danny Buck, the local district attorney, are unsympathetic toward the sunny, sometimes saccharine Bernie. Marjorie changes from sour and alone to happy with Bernie; then she gets possessive. What will sweet Bernie do?

Movie Reviews

eFilmCritic.com - 10/10 by Peter SobczynskiLinklater once again demonstrates a flair for casting that has distinguished his entire career.
The Aristocrat - 10/10 by Adam Ross... Bernie is an unusual film with charm to spare, but it also happens to be laugh out loud funny, enthralling, profoundly sad and ultimately one of the year's best films.
Irish Times - 10/10 by Tara BradyIt looks like a southern gothic and feels like a particularly hilarious farce, but Bernie is not at all what you think.
Time Out - 10/10 by Joshua RothkopfMatthew McConaughey finally locates his perfect métier as the town's Fordian skeptic, a district attorney who smells a rat.
San Francisco Chronicle - 10/10 by Mick LaSalleYou should have the opportunity to experience the movie the way I did, in complete ignorance, enjoying its every weird turn.
Hollywood & Fine - 10/10 by Marshall FineWhat gives Bernie its fizz, its kick, its sheer enjoyable weirdness is the give-and-take between Black and MacLaine, who seems to live with a baleful look on her face.
New York Post - 9/10 by Lou LumenickJack Black gives the performance of his career in the title role of Bernie, under the pitch-perfect direction of his "School of Rock'' director, Richard Linklater, who expertly crafts a black comedy with a deceptively sunny surface. It's the best movie I've seen all spring.
Observer - 9/10 by Rex ReedIt's a delectable slice of Southern Gothic humor, a side show of rednecks and Bubbas and Aunt Tooties.
NPR - 9/10 by Jeannette CatsoulisThe wonder of Black's performance here is its empathy and balance: inasmuch as he can disappear into any role, he dissolves into this one with no hint of mocking remove. It's a beautiful thing to see.
Saporta Report (Atlanta) - 9/10 by Eleanor Ringel CaterThe Coen brothers at their very best could've made this movie. I'll bet they wish they had.
