CinePassionFernando F. CroceAgainst Mann's splendors, as always, lie the elusiveness of civilization, the flux of alliances, and the purgative wrestling of warriors
Antagony & EcstasyTim BraytonIt's like Stewart was pouring every negative emotion he felt over the past ten years into one moment.
Combustible CelluloidJeffrey M. AndersonOne of five masterful Westerns Anthony Mann made with James Stewart.
User ReviewNicolas AGreat adventures western classic, with James Stewart acting perfectly, if you like classic adventure movies then you really should see this one.
User ReviewPrivate UThis 'obscure' and 'light" 1952 western is my favorite of all time. You can see it as a standard genre adventure (get the wagons through) but the paring and contrasting of Stewart and Kennedy makes this something much deeper if you are prepared to look. It also contains two of the coolest scenes of all time. One is the mid-shot of Stewart, Kennedy and Hudson shooting their way out of the Saloon and the other is Stewart's anger at the campfire scene. Some actors have come close to Stewart's position as an 'everyman' (Tom Hanks for example), but what they all lack is the ability to get angry like you can feel it. A little masterpiece.
User ReviewJulien GUn très très bon western sur les convois, mené par un James Stewart toujours aussi grand!
User ReviewJason GBend of the River is truly a great movie. Anthony Mann and Jimmy Stewart create a masterful picture that keeps you watching until the exciting climax. I really love this movie and anyone that likes Jimmy Stewart would too!

User ReviewK HFlawless, complex western with great characterizations and a riveting pace. My favorite Jimmy Stewart role besides Vertigo. Easily beats out Rancho Notorious for my favorite western, ever.
User ReviewDevin W... Like waking up to a fresh cup of coffee... WITH James Stewart! What a beautiful, deeply complex, ruthless tale of the mythical West! I'm breathless. Firstly, the relationship between two men with ruthless pasts and whether they are really able to change is the bread and butter of this film. Stewart and Kennedy are outstanding as former boarder raiders; they reminded me of DeNiro and Pacino in "Heat" - only 40 years earlier! They're doppelgangers. Also, for 1952, Mann's direction is truly ballsy. It's definitely among Mann's most violent films, but also among his best work too.
