After a card shark is caught cheating, he is taken out and lynched by the drunkards he was playing against. Soon afterwards, the men who were in the lynch mob start being murdered, one after another; all by hanging, strangling, or smothering. Who will be killed next and who is responsible? Is it one of the original party seeking to cover their accursed deed, or perhaps the mysterious Rev. Jonathan Rudd, who has recently arrived in town?... (Full plot summary below)

Three Movie Buffs - 8/10 by Scott NashWithout the presence of Martin and Mitchum this would be strictly a B-Movie, but with them it becomes something quite enjoyable.
User Review - 10/10 by david tA classic western showdown between a card player and a preacher...A great rainy day movie.
User Review - 10/10 by Tracey cAfter a poker player is lynched for cheating, the members of the lynching party start dying one by one. This Western is fairly well made by veteran Hathaway, but the plot is too simplistic to raise it above mediocrity. The identity of the killer is so obvious that even a two-year old can figure out who done it. Apparently, there are no two-year olds in town, as nobody seems to have a clue who it could be. Martin is his usual unflappable self as one of the card players who tried to stop the hanging. Mitchum plays a variation on his psycho preacher character in "The Night of the Hunter." McDowall seems out of place in a Western. Stevens provides love interest.
User Review - 10/10 by Shannon Pwhat a dyanmic cast this was i totally enjoyed it kept me on edge till the end best western i seen in along time.
User Review - 8/10 by Clay BThis is generally regarded as weaker than "The sons of Katie Elder" and "True Grit", which are the films Henry Hathaway made before and after this one. I did not expect too much from it, though I remember enjoying it when I first watched it in my childhood. And well, once again I was pleasantly surprised. I actually still like it. Ok, the mystery is easy enough to solve, and the two girls trying to win the gamblers (Dean Martin) heart may not be to interesting. But still, this film is good fun. I like the slow but steady pacing, and I really like som of the acting. Mitchum is brilliant as always, though not quite as terrifying in this reverend-role as he was as Harry Powell in "The Night of the Hunter". Not a classic, but a nice little murder mystery and western combined.
User Review - 8/10 by Gary B1968 rocked for westerns. Love this movie. Western/Mystery. You try to figure who is the killer. Everytime someone dies , a chair is turned up.
User Review - 8/10 by Tom HDean Martin and Mitchum are great as card sharks
User Review - 8/10 by Ben RThis is a good Western with solid performances by Dean Martin, Robert Mitchum, Yaphet Kotto, and Roddy McDowell. The rapid pace suspense is nicely balanced with the suave and cool demeanor of Martin's character--a professional gambler. The plot twist is interesting and unique, but perhaps unsurprising for a film from the late 60's.
User Review - 8/10 by Steve BInteresting western with some twists. A card game gone bad and one by one its members are murdered. Dean Martin as the gambler who runs the game. Roddy McDowall and Bob Mitchum assist.
