Chicago TribuneGene SiskelDesigned for everybody who still hasn't had his or her fill of break dancing, or who doesn't yet understand that break dancing, rap singing and graffiti are legitimate expressions of the urban artistic impulse.
Washington PostRita KempleyThe music is electric on Beat Street, a good-natured, emotional movie, where morals are as sound as they were in the mom's-in-the-kitchen, dad's-in-insurance sitcoms of the '50s and '60s.
Cinema CrazedFelix Vasquez Jr.Holds up pretty well as one of the few hip hop musicals and a neat time capsule when hip hop was growing and still on the fringes of the mainstream.
Time Out LondonTrevor JohnstonPretty bland, but you have to admit co-producer Belafonte had an eye for talent, spotlighting HipHop legends-in-the-making Afrika Bambaata and the Soul Sonic Force, the Rock Steady Crew, and Grand Master Melle Mel and The Furious Five.
User ReviewKelvin WI recently watched this again with my daughter's father in Brooklyn. He had no idea what a classic this movie was; he is from the islands. Once he saw the breakdancing he was glued! Wait til I show him Breakin'. I also saw Lee in the Bronx on Fordham road and he still looks the same! Cap to the side and everything! He was eating a bag of chips; too funny! The only thing he didn't rock was the gazelles.
User ReviewPete-Debbie KA true hip-hop classic. There are those (like me) who are more into the hip hop of today, but have yet to have experienced the true roots of it. Look no further than Beat Street. Favorite parts: The Christmas bit with Magnificent Force and the three dudes + Doug E Fresh. The Roxy battle between the Rock Steady Crew and the NYC Breakers. Melle Mel and the Furious Five's funky bit at the end, with Rock Steady and the NYC Breakers performing. Us Girls at the club. Afrika Bambaataa and the Soulsonic Force's cameo.
