rec.arts.movies.reviewsJames SanfordFor what it is, essentially a steamy and well-made period-piece, 'Artemisia' plays fairly effectively.
Film Journal InternationalDavid NohIt's been richly photographed and designed, but soon degenerates into a typical flesh-and-sin charade.
Critics Inc./America OnlineBrandon Judellan always perceptive look into the life of an artist only previously known to the most academic of us. Merlet brings the sixteen-hundreds alive with all its wantonness.
User ReviewMaxime HI got this film because one of my daughter has so much artistic talent and I love the film too
User ReviewPrivate UGreat for people who enjoy artist films and can watch films with subtitles. If I remember right, this is a French movie taking place in Italy. Way better than A Girl With a Pearl Earring. If you like Sarah Dunant's Birth of Venus book, I think this might come close to a movie for it.
User ReviewBruce BA wonderful movie. I came across this on a list of Movies shown at the 1997 Toronto International Film Festival. This is one of those films that turns out great, not knowing a thing about it going into it. Its about the life of a very young female artist in the 17th century, Being a female and a artist was unheard of in the 17th century, she seems to favor painting male nudity, she falls in love with a older male artist and loses her virginity to him, another thing unheard of in the 17th century (Things haven't changed much) The man is taken to court and put in prison for his affair with her. This is not one of those movies you will find on the shelves of Wal-Mart nor one your going to hear much about other then here. But its worth every minute of your time. Add it to your collection. At the very lease rent it.
User ReviewJulia AAmazing, breathtaking, beautiful. I had no expectations whatsoever and I was struck by the emotion of this movie, by its beauty, by its colors. It inspired me to learn more about Artemisia herself and led me to the brink of tears. I loved it.
User ReviewRebecca BAlthough parts of this movie made me feel uncomfortable, I felt the main point of the movie showed a young woman breaking society's mold.
User Review.Lazy.Bones. .i seen it in my art class. the story of Artemisia Gentileschi, is interesting.
User ReviewDelphine DYes, this movie is historically inaccurate. Fact. But as a story in its own right, a story the writers created to talk about cultural oppression, historical editing, and the female perspective, it is really quite beautiful.
