Movie Reviews

L.A. Weekly - 10/10 by Jean OppenheimerThe music, rhythms and vibrant colors of the city are beautifully woven into cinematographer Jacob Sarmento Solitrenick's unobtrusive hand-held camerawork, while director/co-writer Tata Amaral reveals a deft hand with actors.
Film Journal International - 9/10 by Frank LoveceEach of the stars and most of the supporting players are real-life rappers/singers and not professional actors, adding to the improvisational-seeming naturalism that gives the movie an exotic insider feel.
New York Post - 8/10 by V.A. Musetto...a raw reality underscored by believable performances by nonprofessional actors.
Boxoffice Magazine - 8/10 by Tim CogshellIt's amazing what a limited runtime can do to focus a storyline.
New York Daily News - 6/10 by Elizabeth Weitzman...the unpolished actors and raw São Paolo setting offer an unusually authentic feel.
Slant Magazine - 6/10 by Ed GonzalezThe style of Antonia, like the melodramas that simmer at its center, is neither smutty nor glorifying, sensitively keyed to the struggles of its working-class characters.
User Review - 10/10 by Maya LI can't stop cry and I can't stop smile
User Review - 8/10 by Private UI saw this film at the Seattle International Film Festival and loved the music and singing. The plot is the typical "band gets together, band has problems, band breaks up and eventually gets back together" feel to it but the subplots are well done and the singing is superb.
User Review - 8/10 by Nicole GSaw in NY at the Brazilian Film Festival (Moma), where the director introduced the film herself the first day of the festival. Its the story of a band of girls from the favelas in Rio; band slowly disintegrates as the usual socio-econ problems catch up with them; gets back together. Great music. Received a standing ovation.
User Review - 8/10 by Pondering TI saw this film at the Rio Festival. It was its first presentation, when all actors (with their fabulous clothes and hats) and the director introduced the film. A such wonderful moment and a such wonderful film too.
