Cassandra Jones is a young woman from Toronto with a very active imagination and unique view of the world. Feeling trapped by life in her low-income community, and unable to relate to her brother Patrick, a petty criminal, or her overly pious mother, Mary, Cassandra decides to leave Toronto. She applies and is accepted into an exchange program between Quebec and West Africa. When she reaches her Quebec destination, a pig farm, she encounters, Sylvie Leblanc, a woman in need of change, her husband, Luc Leblanc, a man afraid of change and Abdoulaye Diallo, her African exchange counter-part, a man who regrets his decision to seek change. Because none of her expectations are met, Cassandra quickly becomes unhappy on the farm. Her presence creates plenty of tension, much of it humorous. A surprising conclusion comes about after a roller-coaster series of events.

User Review - 8/10 by Paul K3. Another Planet Wed Jan 14, 2009 Starz #12 7pm B 85 :fresh: This doc was good, not great. Surprising, since it won the 2008 Maysles Brothers Award for Best Documentary at the Denver Film Fest. I saw 11 docs at DFF 2008 and I think every one of them was better than Another Planet. I even saw a documentary called Megalopolis, which was super similar to Another Planet, but far superior. I think what dragged this down was one of the main elements that probably was intended to set this documentary apart, and that was the stories of the 7 different children living in oppressive and poverty stricken conditions around the world. Their narratives only touched the surface and made the film muddy and unfocused. I wanted to care about the stories of these children, but I wasn't given enough information before the film moved on to it's main "Koyaanisqatsi derived" focus. If you run across this and have an interest, check it out. Otherwise, be on the lookout for Megalopolis.
