King Henry VIII (Richard Burton) of England discards one wife, Catharine of Aragon (Irene Papas), who has failed to produce a male heir, in favor of a young and beautiful woman, Anne Boleyn (Geneviève Bujold), whose one-thousand-day reign as Queen of England ends with the loss of her head on the block. Henry weds Anne and soon she gives him a child. The girl, Elizabeth (Amanda Jane Smythe), is a bitter disappointment to Henry, who desperately wants an heir. Anne promises Henry a son "next time", but Henry is doubtful. Shortly thereafter, rumors begin that the King's eye has already wandered. One Jane Seymour (Lesley Paterson) is at court for a moment. The Queen has her sent away, but, if Anne will bring Jane back to court, the King promises to sign the Act of Succession to insure that Elizabeth will be Queen.

Movie Reviews

The Spectator - 10/10 by Penelope HoustonIt's all court flummery, simplified Tudor connivings, Anthony Quayle looking like a querulous crayfish.
Variety - 7/10 by Variety StaffAnne of the Thousand Days is a stunning-acted, sumptuous, grand-scale widescreen drama of the royal bed chamber and political intrigues that created the Church of England.
Empire Magazine - 6/10 by David ParkinsonSome plucky performance don't manage to embue this historical drama with the regal spectacle the source material deserves.
Time Out - 5/10 by Tom MilneInterminable plod through the story of Henry the Eighth and Anne Boleyn.
Chicago Reader - 4/10 by Dave KehrIt's about what you'd expect -- slow, dry, fleetingly intelligent.
User Review - 10/10 by I don't know wAn incredible movie: nigh flawless, a rightful classic.
User Review - 10/10 by Denise HA lusty and powerful movie about Henry VIII and his romance (and eventual troubled marriage) to Anne Boleyn. Richard Burton is superb in his role as Henry--a besotted man in his early 40's desperate to have a male heir to leave his kingdom to. Genevieve Bujold plays her part with skill and courage as the woman (Anne Boleyn) who plots her way to Henry's bed and as his queen. The dynamics at court and the different players and their schemes weave a dangerous web with tragic consequences! A movie to watch over and over again.
User Review - 10/10 by John YReally great film that displays the talent from these great actors. Not that historically accurate, but it's still an amazing film.
User Review - 10/10 by Ian Bit is v well acted , even better watched the second time - surely the sign of a great film .
User Review - 10/10 by Haytham KDespite its historical inaccuracies, this magnificently staged costume epic about King Henry VIII's relationship with wife Anne Boleyn is one of the best period films from the 1960's. Richard Burton and Gnevieve Bujold are outstanding, with great support from Irene Papas and Anthony Quayle.
