Ron, who's young, slight, and privileged, is sentenced to prison on marijuana charges. For whatever reason, he brings out paternal feelings in an 18-year prison veteran, Earl Copan, who takes Ron under his wing. The film explores the nature of that relationship, Ron's part in Earl's gang, and the way Ron deals with aggressive cons intent on assault and rape. Ron's lawyer is working on getting Ron out quickly, Earl has a shot at parole, and death seems to be waiting in the next cell. Will prison turn Ron into an animal?

Movie Reviews

Entertainment Today - 9/10 by Brent SimonWe may have seen this type of Animal before, but Furlong and Dafoe's work -- and Buscemi's honest, caring touch with these fringe-dwellers -- make it seem fresh.
Planet Sick-Boy - 9/10 by Jon PopickA scary and unflinching look at prison life.
Christian Science Monitor - 8/10 by David SterrittGets much of its power from Willem Dafoe's potent portrayal of Copen.
Detour Magazine - 8/10 by Brandon Judellthere are two reasons to fast-forward this offering when it's released on video: (1) Mickey Rourke's over-the-top bejeweled drag queen and (2) Tom Arnold's truly rotten performance as a baddy who has the hots for boy-buns. Roseanne's finally gotten her re
Mr. Showbiz - 8/10 by Kevin MaynardWillem Dafoe steals the picture with his comic timing.
New York Post - 8/10 by Jonathan ForemanBuscemi's directing blends hard-hitting visual qualities with great emotional energy.
Film Journal International - 8/10 by Eric MonderPerhaps at 95 minutes, the film is just too short to do justice to all these matters, and maybe one needs to read the Edward Bunker novel to fill in the blanks.
Los Angeles Times - 8/10 by Gene SeymourOne of the least sensationalistic--and therefore, more unsettlingly plausible--visions of prison life ever transfigured into big-screen drama.
Village Voice - 8/10 by Amy TaubinTender, poignant, and homoerotically charged, this complicated father-son relationship is brought to life by two brilliant actors and a director who's canny enough to give them all the room they need.
Compuserve - 8/10 by Harvey S. KartenWhere Darabont's drama is an overlong 142 minutes, Buscemi's is a just-right 94, and where Shawshank is predictable, Animal Factory surprises.
