Seymour Levov, going by the nickname of 'Swede' in the Jewish community he was born into, was even more of an all-American than Douglas Fairbanks himself. He had just everything an American idol can dream of: not only was the tall muscular young man a high school star athlete but he married a beauty queen named Dawn in the bargain. And as if all this were not enough, Swede later became the successful manager of the glove factory his father had founded, which allowed him to live with his wife in a beautiful house in the New Jersey countryside. Well-mannered, always bright, smiling and positive, conservative but with a liberal edge, what bad could ever happen to him? | indieWireDavid EhrlichOne of the most perceptive novels of the 20th century becomes one of the most ill-conceived movies of the 21st as Ewan McGregor tries his hand at directing with this ruinously streamlined adaptation of Philip Roth's 1997 masterpiece. |
Blu-ray.comBrian Orndorf"American Pastoral" is ambitious but it's also a mess, a colossal one at times.
BeliefnetNell MinowEven McGregor's palpable sincerity cannot obscure the film's smug misogyny.
Boston HeraldStephen SchaeferPastoral, however, belongs to its two leading women. Connelly shows enormous range... Fanning hauntingly suggests a living ghost, a leper who only occasionally sees sunlight.
AARP Movies for GrownupsBill NewcottAs Swede, McGregor evokes an overwhelming sadness that deepens until he seems to become an emotional black hole from which no lightness can escape.
Chilango.comIra FrancoA film far from perfection, but its visual smoothness and the narrative rhythm of a powerful story allows moments of true inspiration and a heartbreaking beauty. [Full review in Spanish]
Fresno BeeRick BentleyAmerican Pastoral is as powerful as any movie that uses war as a catalyst for the story. It shows that emotional scars can be created in a myriad of ways.
Deadline Hollywood DailyPete HammondSorry fellow critics but you are WAY off on this one. American Pastoral gets it right and becomes one of the best Phillip Roth adaptations ever.
AV ClubA.A. DowdThis is a memory we’re watching, so of course it’s going to be vaguely distorted, its cracks plugged by cliché. Even if you buy that, though, American Pastoral still gives off the strong impression of a rich, complicated story that’s been flattened of its nuance.
New York TimesStephen HoldenAmerican Pastoral leaves a residue of dread and despair that is oddly in keeping with today’s moment of uncertainty amid an ugly presidential campaign.
