Guy Carter is an award-winning graduate student of architecture. He's got a beautiful wife and a baby on the way. The problem? He doesn't have "his ducks in a row," which only fuels his doubts about being a good father. Guy has been trying to find work in his field for a year with no luck. At wit's end, his wife Anne finds him a job as a 'driver' on Craigslist. Guy shows up for the interview thinking he'll be delivering pizzas, but quickly realizes it's a job driving prostitutes. With money too scarce to turn down, he goes for it- which is where he meets Nikki, the tough-as-nails, unapologetic sex worker, and her two hilarious and foul-mouthed cohorts, Jaxi and Fallon. As reluctant driver and protector Guy is thrust into a world of rockin' women and feeble men. Over the course of one wild and sordid night, and several 'come-to-Jesus' moments, Guy proves to Nikki, and himself, that he does have what it takes to be the responsible father his family deserves.
Leave your thoughts about Amateur Night.
Blu-ray.comBrian Orndorf"Amateur Night" isn't wild or funny. It would rather spray its characters with vaginal fluid than dream up a killer punchline.
The PlaylistJason OoiHere is a film about truly extraordinary events that is mostly autobiographical and true to the lives and experiences of writers and directors Joe Syracuse and Lisa Addario which never manages to feel personal, and instead is reduced to coming off as just another raunchy comedy.
Los Angeles TimesMichael RechtshaffenThe film insistently asserts its autobiographical roots at the expense of sharper plotting and characterizations, not to mention more energetic pacing.
The Hollywood ReporterFrank ScheckBiggs is appealing in the central role, although for him, conveying mortified embarrassment doesn't exactly qualify as an acting stretch. But he does have good chemistry with Montgomery.
Village VoiceChris PackhamBesides the narrative reversal, Montgomery is the only interesting part of the film — smart, obstinate, and ambitious. The gross-out scenes and raunchy banter between the film's sex workers are funny, but its world is pretty small and unsurprising.
Slant MagazineKeith WatsonThe film is peppered with interesting true-life details, but these are overwhelmed by frantic comedic sequences.
3AWJim SchembriJason Biggs plays a failing architect who becomes an Uber driver for a trio of Los Angeles hookers, one of whom is played by Ashley Tisdale in a salty performance intended to distance her from the sweet turns she did in the High School Musical films.
