The Walter Wanger production was a remake of the successful 1937 French film P�©p�© le Moko, which derived its plot from the Henri La Barthe novel of the same name. John Howard Lawson wrote the screenplay. The movie was a sensation because it was the first Hollywood film starring Hedy Lamarr whose stunning beauty became the main feature for moviegoers. The film is notable as one of the sources of inspiration to the screenwriters of the 1942 Warner Brothers film Casablanca who wrote it with Hedy Lamarr in mind as the original female lead. The story is like in the original French film (and novel), about a beautiful rich girl Gabrielle (Gaby) ,who is on holiday in Algiers with her fiance, and meets and falls in love with the notorious jewel thief Pepe le Moko, has for two years lived in, and virtually ruled, the mazelike, impenetrable Casbah, the "native quarter" of Algiers. I had heard of the film, and I just had see this film; so I had taped on TCM and I watched it and I love it; and you know that song that was played (and sung) in the film "C'est la vie" it's kind of catchy. |

The sequence in which the camera focuses on Pepe's desperate and methodic steps as he walks in his self created cage is a rare moment in film were a single shot tells so much by doing seemingly a lot and very little at the same time. It may be campy in dialogue, but it seems to work... I was certainly entertained. |
| User ReviewLarry SHaving never wated a film with Hedy Lamarr I was glad to find this on NetFlix. I have seen photos of Hedy and read some biographies on her, but have never seen her in a movie. She is truely one of the most beautiful women I have seen in the movies. The chemistry between her and Charles Boyer electrifies through the old black and white print of the film I saw. Its not in the classic case of Casablanca, but still a good film with fascinating characters. |
