Following the Mandal Commission report and the Supreme Court of India's decision to maintain a 27 percent reservation for Dalits and lower/backward castes, right-winged political parties organize protests. The Principal of Shakuntala Thakral Mahavidyalal, a non-government college which is exempt from this mandate, gets in the limelight when it's Principal, Prabhakar Anand, endorses the decision - much to the ire of the trustees as well as the newly appointed Vice-Principal Mithilesh Singh, who has invested Rs.1200 Crores in private coaching classes. Prabhakar refuses to change his stand and ends up tendering his resignation, taking his family, consisting of his wife, Kavita and daughter, Poorbi, to live near Shambhu Yadav's Tabela after they find their family home being taken over by Mithilesh's coaching classes. Attempts to evict Mithilesh's staff will be in vain and will not only end up alienating the family from everyone but Prabhakar will also be summoned and possibly arrested for vandalizing the premises of the coaching class and threatening it's staff.

Movie Reviews

The Hollywood Reporter - 7/10 by Lisa TseringAarakshan is heavy on speeches, but the film manages to work because director Prakash Jha has cast it wisely, and has clearly put time and care into exploring the nuances of the issue.
The New York Times - 7/10 by Rachel SaltzSubtle it ain't and subtle it needn't be. It is, though, mostly involving (if Bollywood long, at 2 hours 45 minutes) and even occasionally stirring.
Variety - 7/10 by Ronnie ScheibWhile its questions of affirmative action and charter schools could theoretically resonate with American audiences, the picture's corny theatrics, talky, preachy approach and taxing 164-minute running time will not translate.
The National (UAE) - 6/10 by Kaleem AftabAt times it's so heavy-handed and clunky in laying out the arguments for and against quotas that it resembles a high school debate rather than a quality drama.
Birmingham Mail - 6/10 by Manish GajjarBachchan is at his usual excellent best after years of experience in Hindi cinema.
Time Out - 6/10 by Anil SinananIt is marred by the usual bolly-excesses: an inordinate length, unnecessary songs and the miscasting of real-life royal-blood Khan as a 'dalit' (untouchable). Well acted, though.
User Review - 10/10 by Gisèle BAs always, I am amazed at Amitabh Bachchan's talent. This movie is a tear jerker and a very political and patriotic movie, but it is also very human and that is depicted very well by Mr Bachchan. Very good movie!
User Review - 10/10 by AarakshanExclusive review on: http://humanoidsnevrlie.blogspot.com/2011/08/aarakshan-reservation.html Aarakshan is starred by Amitav, Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone, and Hema Malini etc.
User Review - 10/10 by Vamsi CNice Take on a wonderful subject by the best person suited to the role
User Review - 9/10 by ThegodfathersonAarakshan is well casted and directed. Prakash Jha's debut that has been banned in Delhi goes on to be a mockery in politics but heart of Bollywood. The story- or the banned, censored story- the true story of Delhi students and a well made man's love is a hard hitter principal's daughter and how they managed to conquer their land by a ruthless businessman. Amitabh Bachan does a fine job as the principal and Manoj Bajpayee also does a fine job as The Businessman. The film is rated UA although in some areas of India (due to its banning) got an A rating- it doesn't have A stuff. Just has UA stuff.
