Even when Diana, Neville and David played together as children, Diana knew that she loved Nevs. But Morton, Nevs' father, did not like any Merrick. Since Nevs did not have any money, Morton sent him off to Egypt to work and also talked him out of marrying Diana before he left. Diana waited two years and then married David, who Jeffry thought was the greatest thing since sliced bread. While in Paris, David jumps to his death when the cops come after him and Diana lies about the reason for the sake of Jeffry. Of course Jeffry, who has been a drunk all his life, cuts all ties with Diana. While Nevs still loves Diana, she does not return to England for seven years - just 3 days before Nevs' wedding to Constance.

Ozus' World Movie ReviewsDennis SchwartzAn hysterical and an overacted soap opera story.
User ReviewKatie RThis is a really beautiful romantic melodrama. Again, Garbo is amazing. Her scene in the hospital is outstanding.
User ReviewMichelle FGreat film. I loved the story that seemed to capture the real life relationship between the leads.
User ReviewNann HClassic and lovely. A fine example of later silent films. Greta Garbo needs no words.
User ReviewAn Pgood story great acting and I usually don't like silents
User ReviewDarryl CI've got no complaints when Clarence Brown directs Greta Garbo. There are many adult themes in this pre-code movie: homosexuality, alcoholism, sex outside of marriage, pregnancy, suicide, syphilis... actually syphilis had to be replaced with "embezzeling" in the movie, which was based on a book called "The Green Hat." The author, Arlen, fictionalized the tragic exuberance of the Roaring 20's generation in England as F. Scott Fitzgerald had in the US.
