In the late 1940s, Prince Seretse Khama of Bechuanaland is studying law in Britain in preparation for his eventual ascension to the throne. There, the dashing prince falls in love with a white British clerk, Ruth Williams, and they plan to marry. While they suspect that his uncle, the Regent, would disapprove, nothing prepares them for the diplomatic firestorm and domestic political tumult their defiant love would spark. Now facing a citizenry leery of a white Briton as their Queen, the international opposition is even more unyielding from the British holding their land as a protectorate and fearful of South Africa's racist backlash to this affront to their apartheid domination. Against all odds, King Khama and Ruth must struggle to maintain their love and help their people in a land that would become the Republic of Botswana.

Movie Reviews

Flavorwire - 10/10 by Jason BaileyIf it's all a touch connect-the-dots in story and style, these two gifted actors elevate the material, and shine in it.
Flick Filosopher - 10/10 by MaryAnn JohansonInsistent chemistry between David Oyelowo and Rosamund Pike fuels a true story of passionate romance with an urgent message about love as radical and political.
Spirituality and Practice - 10/10 by Frederic and Mary Ann BrussatA moving film about the love, courage, and perseverance of an interracial couple facing wide-ranging challenges to their marriage.
The Mail on Sunday (UK) - 10/10 by Matthew BondOne of the great British films of 2016: it will send you out into the night knowing a little more about the world and, just possibly, quietly determined to do a little better by it. I couldn't recommend it more highly.
Fresno Bee - 9/10 by Rick BentleyIt would have been easy for one of these plot threads to strangle the other, but the crisp writing, strong direction by Amma Asante plus Oscar-worthy performances by Oyelowo and Pike make each story support the other.
Georgia Straight - 9/10 by Kate WilsonPike and Oyelowo muster a chemistry that transforms the clichéd images of the pair embracing into something genuinely romantic.
East Bay Express - 9/10 by Kelly Vance[Amma Asante's film] contains two praise-worthy performances, in the story of an interracial romance that had major repercussions during the era of European de-colonization in the second half of the 20th Century.
AARP Movies for Grownups - 9/10 by Bill NewcottHarks back to Out of Africa but Khama and Williams are no star-crossed lovers. We savor their triumph, and through it they make the world they live in a little sweeter.
Rolling Stone - 9/10 by Peter TraversIt's a tender love story that never goes soft on its provocations. It's a defiant cry from the heart.
Daily Star - 9/10 by Andy LeaGreat performances from both actors sell the romance and the struggle. This is an inspiring true story that really deserves to be retold.
