"A Modern Affair" is a romantic comedy about the strain of contemporary relationships, one woman's urgent desire for parenthood, and a solution to it all. Grace Rhodes is the perfect corporate executive -- bright, successful, attractive and with just professional touch. With her career in place, Grace feels she has everything she needs -- until she bumps into an ex-boyfriend bearing photos of his young kids. Feeling the irresistible urge to have a child, but not sure about waiting around for Mr. Right," Grace knows what she wants, but not how best to get it. Elaine, her wryly pragmatic best friend, suggests that Grace do the unthinkable and enlist the services of a sperm bank. After choosing a donor from the "DNA menu," Grace becomes pregnant and deeply curious about the identity of the donor #247. Enter Peter Kessler, a handsome photographer who divides his time between his craft, his casual affair with a married woman, and his "other job:" depositing specimens as a sperm donor to earn a little extra cash. When Grace and Peter finally meet, they begin the journey down the rocky road to parenthood and possibly from there to love.

User ReviewWalter BI think this is Stanley Tucci?s first big film role, and you can really tell why his career took off after this. While his character (Peter) may not always be very likable at times in the film, he is a really dynamic character. The big scene where he fights with Lisa Eichhorn?s character is absolutely heart-breaking and so powerful. I love watching him in this film and definitely recommend it for others!
User ReviewJim LI just watched ?A Modern Affair? on Hulu, where they have the entire film online. I was absolutely blown away by Lisa Eichhorn?s performance. She?s realistic, relatable, and smart. As a successful career woman, Grace hasn?t got time for men, nor does she feel like she can ever connect with one. Her best friend is constantly encouraging her to strike up a relationship, but Grace finds it too difficult. However, lacking any real meaning in her personal life, she does decide that she is determined to start a family. Her journey looking for love and happiness isn?t a fairytale like you?d find in some movies, but it?s like real life, which is probably why I like this movie so much. It?s not an escapist film, it?s something real women (and men) can identify with.
User ReviewTeddy MMy favorite scene in this movie is when Stanley Tucci's character goes to the sperm donor bank and instead of using the magazines, he just listens to the Yankees game on the radio. Great writing!!
User ReviewColm YThis film came recommended to me by one of my co-workers and I decided, why not, let's check it out. I didn't really know anything about it, except for the synopsis given on Netflix. Anyway, I rented it and forced my husband to watch it with me a weeks ago. About ten minutes in, I thought "oh god, my husband is going to kill me for making him watch a chick flick." Surprisingly enough, this film turned out to be the exact opposite of that. This isn't a chick flick at all. It's insightful, thoughtful, and appeals to both women AND men. As it turns out, my husband absolutely loved this movie. While this movie is primarily about relationships, it provides both the viewpoints of the man and the woman in the relationship. I really appreciate that sort of thing.
User ReviewKiera MFun and entertaining. Brings up important issues that are still relevant today and is much more than the usual fluffy romantic comedy. Stanley Tucci is great in his role- I was pleasantly surprised to see him in this movie. Eichorn does a nice job of playing off of him and Caroline Aaron is really on in the film- she's probably my favorite part. Definitely worth watching.
User ReviewTasha GI recently discovered this little gem of a movie from the 90's! Lisa Eichhorn plays a powerful business woman who falls in love with her "anonymous" sperm donor, a photographer played by Stanley Tucci. Its fantastic to see Stanley Tucci play a romantic lead. Lisa Eichhorn's character is extremely accessible and boy do I love the fact that she's a successful woman in a man's world. My favorite character is Grace's best friend Elaine played by Caroline Aaron who is hilariously quirky/goofy. I especially love the scene where Elaine poses as an office temp at the sperm bank in order to find Grace's sperm donor's identity. I was very pleasantly surprised by this little film. Definitely worth checking out!
User Reviewf kLisa Eichhorn, Stanley Tucci, and Caroline Aaron are all at their best in this one. Being a huge Stanley Tucci fan, it was interesting to see him in his first big role, before any of his blockbuster movies. You can really see why his career took off after watching it. His performance as an edgy, carefree bachelor is really convincing, and extremely relate-able for men everywhere. The plot was compelling and surprisingly relevant for a film that's 20 years old; definitely ahead of it's time.
User ReviewColin LA Modern Affair is a great romantic film, but this stems mostly from where the romance isn't. This film does a great job portraying the way relationships really work - there is no huge blow up conflict, grandiose "Say Anything" gesture, and then the two ride into the sunset. Rather, A Modern Affair takes a look at the fact that relationships can be messy, but there can still always be happiness and hope despite this. The film is mostly a drama, but there are some snidely funny moments, which lends an intellectual sense of humor to the plot. A huge plus is Stanley Tucci's charisma throughout the movie, and Lisa Eichhorn's overall likability as an actress. It's interesting to watch Tucci as a young actor and in a very low key, honest role - a good foreshadowing of why he plays the roles he does not. Overall, this film is definitely worth the watch.
User ReviewNoah WAt first, I was skeptical about the direction this movie was taken, but i was so pleasantly surprised by this movie. It was sweet and loving while also funny. the perfect movie for a first date or a committed relationship. Stanley Tucci is young. He is plays the perfect role of a smart, determined, sexy man. Despite his age, he exhibits acting abilities that are precocious. Lisa Eichhorn is gorgeous as ever. Although I think that she may have been the weakest role, that is only because every other character was so strong. Her pain and sadness in the movie is so heartfelt that it sucks the viewer in even further. I loved this movie and you will too.
User ReviewElena SI watched this film because I will watch anything with Stanley Tucci. I wasn't expecting much, and was surprised to come across such a gem. Grace Rhodes' biological clock is ticking and time is running out. As a single woman in New York City, she's having a hard time finding the perfect man and feels the need for something more fulfilling in her life to break her solitude. She, she finds the perfect solution, she decides to go for in vitro fertilization with an anoymous donor. Soon, she's pregnant, but that's not enough, she becomes obsessed with meeting the father in person. Stanley Tucci plays Peter Kessler, an artist who wants to hold onto his bachelor life when Grace Rhodes steps in. What follows is a beautiful, contemporary love story that could only be told our times of technology. A Modern Affair is a heart felt and unique version of the traditional boy meets girl love story. Highly recommended for a quiet evening in - or to convince a partner to have a child!! Stanley Tucci and Lisa Eichhorn are both wonderful, by the way!
