Monthly Film BulletinMFB CriticsThe acting is firm, exact and sympathetic.
Village VoiceAlan ScherstuhlNeither Vic nor Ingrid is an especially compelling presence, but the actors make the sad moments pierce and the bursts of jubilation explode.
At the Movies (Australia)David StrattonI was, and still am, deeply moved by the plight of both Vic and Ingrid in their attempt to find happiness and 'a kind of loving'.
VarietyVariety StaffJune Ritchie makes an appealing debut as the bewildered Lancashire lass. Alan Bates is a likeable hero who will hold most audience's sympathy despite his weaknesses.
User ReviewKaren FI love these old 60s dramas, and this is one of the best ones. It's hard to know who to feel most sympathy for - Vic, trapped into marriage, or Ingrid, who used sex not to trap Vic, but to try to make him love her. Ingrid's mother is the final straw - and Thora Hird plays her so well. The morals may be a little dated, but the humanity of the relationships isn't.
User ReviewMiguel CSplendid look at a time long gone, and yet still topical. Alan Bates takes a star-making turn and earns the heart of the viewer. Thora Hird steals every scene she's in!
User ReviewEbba RIncredible film. Stellar writing, directing and acting.
User ReviewEric Bthis film just reminds me so much of my own youthful search for love and understanding. the scene where young Vic looks at his girlfriend in a cafe and realises they have nothing to say to each other is gut wrenching. A kind of loving indeed
User ReviewNick GIt's life just as we know it. A classic of its genre from when British films set the standard and created the blueprint for the realists that followed.
