Slant MagazineDan CallahanCooper and Hays bring Borzage's liking for towering, vulnerable men and tiny, tough women to its visual apotheosis (her head barely reaches his armpit when they walk).
GuardianSteve RoseA fascinatingly awkward first world war epic - dated, yet bracingly modern.
Little White LiesMark AschBorzage effaces his leading man completely - what must Hemingway have thought? - the better to conflate passion and passivity, and you're borne right along.
Empire MagazineDavid ParkinsonLacks the raw gusto of the book but beautifully played by its two leads.
Total FilmPhilip KempCooper was never more handsome, and the chemistry between him and Hayes glows from the screen.
Goatdog's MoviesMichael W. Phillips, Jr.It's not as good as the book, but it succeeds in its own right, which is really all I ask of adaptations.
EmanuelLevy.ComEmanuel LevyThe first Hemingway novel made into a Hollywood film is also one of the better ones due to Gary Cooper's star turn and Borzage's stylized helming, even if a happy ending was imposed against the author's wishes and protests.
Classic Film and TelevisionMichael E. GrostGreat tragic romance about soldier and nurse in World War I is still a landmark film.
User ReviewJoanne BA beautiful war time love story. If this doesnt pull at your heart strings.....your made of ice.
User ReviewGreg WFollowing his second Best Director Oscar, Frank Borzage was contracted to direct this first of many future Hemingway adaptations, and in retrospect, eighty years later, it's still the best. All eyes are on Gary Cooper, in an early romantic role, as Hemingway's American lieutenant in Italy, falling deeply in love with Helen Hayes as a saintly nurse, only naturally to be ripped apart by war and tragedy. For an early sound production, the camera is surprisingly mobile, and the beautiful cinematography deservedly won an Oscar.
