User Reviewvin shen bA Chinese Tall story has to have one of the craziest plots I have ever seen. Featuring a monk with a group of supernatural guardians, hoards of bug soldiers, a group of demons, and time travelers from the future, you get a movie that is funny, dramatic and action-packed. When the wandering monk reaches a city, they praise him but soon try and sacrifice him to have the children of the city returned. One of his guardians launch him on their staff that can do just about anything when you tell it "I will love you for 10,000 years" which causes him to land in a demon camp with a foul looking demon who falls in love with him. If you want to see a crazy movie, with one of the most off-beat plots I have ever encountered, A Chinese Tall Story is definitely up you're alley. Don't be afraid, dive in, it won't kill you, and if it does, giant Buddha will come and re-animate you as a horse anyway.
User ReviewSze-To Mjust re-visited this film today. when i get off from Chinese Odyssey and treat it as an unique movie, it becomes a great and rare Hong Kong movie. Jeffrey Lau can be as romantic as Wong Kar Wai.
User ReviewChris SThe some parts of the movie is mixed from Chinese classical novels and literature, so it might be a bit confusing (or even absolutely nonsensical) for those who dont know about it. Xuanzang (in the story he is called as Tripitaka), is a budhist monk that is on a pilgrimage to india, to obtain Bhuddist religious texts called Sutras. He is accompanied by 3 protectors during his journey, namely Sun Wukong (the Monkey King), Zhu Bajie (the Pig Monk), and Sha Wujing (the Sand Monk). The story takes place on middle earth, when they arrive in the city of Sache..... Although the plot displaying on the movie board says that its a love story, honestly, theres so much more to it than that, theres evil tree spirits, a millenium bug deamon (lol crazy !), swarms of bug soldiers, lizard people, imps, and time travelers from the future. Hawayy! I loved the CGI! It reminded me very much of Final Fantasy slash Stargate slash (Dragon ball Z??!) Okay so the movie made me cry a bit, ehehe! I wasnt really expecting to be blown away by this, this exceeded my expectations by a mile wide! I was only expecting cheezy comedy when I got this, but lo and behold Im very suprised and quite pleased with this one! :D Im mighty interested with getting a copy of the Journey to the West (book), all just because of this movie. Please keep in mind that this movie is, as the title says, A TALL TALE, it is not to be analyzed or taken so seriously. It is after all a chinese comedy/drama/fantasy/sci-fi/action-adventure movie, and their target market included kids.
User ReviewArnaud Ltheres hardly any movies about the pastconfunsing but amusing
User ReviewBernice Ythe subtitles are disappearing faster now lol First 20mins is awesome Watch out for the spider-man cameo lol
User ReviewKunyan XAwesome graphic effects. Jeffrey Lau said that this is the sequel to the previous two Chinese Odysseys. I think this movie is acceptable. It's weird that Fan Bin Bin actually likes Charlene, not Nicholas.
User ReviewPrivate UJeff Lau has his unique style in storytelling and despite all the bubblegum pop singer cast, his storytelling methods still shine. it was a nice take in the "Journey to the west" story. once again, i personally worked on the dvd release of this movie. in fact, not only did i translate the commentary, i also translated the interviews, making of's, and practically every other bonus feature found on the dvd.
User ReviewJoey PThis film is campy, all out fun. It's convulated, ridiculous and borders on the absurd. No, wait, it IS absurd, which makes it intensely funny. The bad CG contributes to its general laughability and once again, hong kong cinema manages to charm by being so fantastical and imaginative. Definitely out of this world, in more ways than one :)
User ReviewVeronica HThe ending of this movie dragged and was very frustrating, but the story is classic and sweet.
User ReviewWS WNot perfect, but as with everything from the Journey to West, infused with the side-effects of an opium overdose or the energy of an uncompromising, unbrindled imagination. So, if you like to go from legendary antics to ufo madness, go for it!
