Movie Reviews

Creative Loafing - 9/10 by Matt BrunsonHas any other cinematic genre offered as many buried treasures as film noir? Here's another unpolished gem to add to the stack.
Parallax View - 6/10 by Sean Axmaker99 River Street, arguably Karlson's greatest film and certainly his most beautifully brutal, is a film driven by the fury of a man who is tired of being life's punching bag.
Combustible Celluloid - 6/10 by Jeffrey M. AndersonPhil Karlson directed series of very tough, violent film noirs, but few of them are as tough and violent as the superb 99 River Street.
User Review - 10/10 by Paul ZThere was a humble brilliance that often emerged from the classic Hollywood genre cinema that is perfectly realized in this gritty, sharply written gem helmed by low-budget workhorse Phil Karlson. John Payne's down-trodden protagonist has our sympathy from minute one to fade out, making the detours in the constantly thrilling plot that much more exciting, and the un-noir-like ending gratifying and well-earned. The cast is refreshingly eclectic, distinctive, real, likable and memorable, as is the nuanced night-world atmosphere, which is another equally well-realized character.
User Review - 8/10 by Luke WGreat acting all around, and the plot is interesting as well, with some interesting twists and turns along the way.
User Review - 8/10 by Eric RAn overlooked noir about a washed up boxer whom relives his glory days, and urns to have one more chance at his title shot. John Payne really does a gread job as Ernie Driscoll, our hard-nosed ex-boxer whom really defines masculinity in his view of the world and himself. The script is really well written and as Driscoll's voyage towards one more shot at vindication moves forward, you just can't help but be brought in.
User Review - 8/10 by Bill MHooray, the titular address is in my hometown Jersey City....Google Maps here I come!
User Review - 8/10 by Blake PBack when drama and suspense made a movie and not sex and swearing like the American movies of today. Made in 1953 this movie stands out there as it is full of drama and suspense. A fighter is just seconds away from becoming the world champion but gets hit above the eye in a fight and with that his dreams and fight days are over, his wife finds another man and his troubles begin. He's just a cap driver now and she wants more, so she helps a thug steal some diamonds and that too goes wrong, Movie is full of suspense and has a full cast of fifties stars who made a lot of different TV series appearances. A Old B&W that gets 4 stars
User Review - 8/10 by Konstantine SBegins with two important lessons: Actresses, never trust a 9pm private casting call, and everyone else, don't trust actresses. Unrelated: Evelyn Keyes is too sexy for 1953.
User Review - 8/10 by Stephen EWhat a captivating noir this is with very impressive performances especially John Payne as Ernie Driscoll and Evelyn Keyes as Linda James. Recommended viewing for sure.
