Classic Film and Television - 9/10 by Michael E. GrostWell done murder investigation with forensics from Harvard and a pioneering Hispanic policeman.
User Review - 8/10 by Robert EExcellent film noir from the gifted director John Sturges ( The Great Escape, Bad Day at Black Rock, The Magnificent Seven) and staring the young Ricardo Montalban (Fantasy Island) in an atypical dramatic role. Also costarring Elsa Lanchester as the boarding house owner with questionable values. Set in a time long before CSI, a police detective decides to enlist a Harvard professor to solve a murder mystery. I found this to be a surprising pearl of a move that I enjoyed.
User Review - 8/10 by John MBasically CSI:Noir circa 1950. An interesting early look at forensic science and a good potboiler.
User Review - 8/10 by Jason CHighly entertaining police procedural/wrong man flick with Ricardo Montalban trying to solve the mystery of an unidentified skeleton. The film is loaded with black humor and colorful characters... especially Elsa Lanchester, who absolutely steals the show as the unscrupulous landlady Mrs. Smerrling. I tend to put procedurals in a separate category or offshoot of noir, but I still enjoy them. I like watching the evidence unfold, and chasing down clues, and blind alleys and the interplay of luck and skill. This movie handles those elements quite well and always manages to keep things interesting. And with John Alton behind the camera, you're guaranteed fantastic noirish visuals. I've read some other reviews online, and a lot of people seem to think it drags, but I didn't think so at all. I was pretty engaged throughout the length of the film. It does have a bizarre, fragmented narrative, but it totally worked for me. One unusual aspect is that this is one of the few noirs (maybe the only one) I've seen that was shot on location in Boston. It ends on a very out-of-place plug for Harvard (some kind of thank you for their participation, I suppose).
User Review - 8/10 by Julio SA really unique noir; the pseudo-CSI investigation stuff was intriguing, as were the characters and plot. Great performances by Ricardo Montalban and Elsa Lanchester.
User Review - 8/10 by Robert SExcellent film noir piece. On of the first to use forensic evidence. Ricardo Montalban is excellent as the detective trying to piece it all together. Worth a look.
User Review - 8/10 by Scott MClassic murder noir. Beautiful B/W shots. Ricardo Montalban is da man.
User Review - 8/10 by Stuart SA fascinating noir style film masking an excellent police procedural with early crime lab help from the "Legal Medicine" department at Harvard School of Medicine. The doc on the DVD referred to it as a "CSI: Noir". Definitely good stuff, filmed on location around Harvard in Cambridge and around the Boston area. Wonderful performance by Lanchester as the scheming blackmailer landlady of the murdered girl, and Montalban as Lt. Morales is surprisingly effective. Screenplay by Leonard Spigelgass, who also worked on the Damon Runyon-derived "The Big Street" as well as "I Was a Male War Bride" and "All Through the Night."
User Review - 8/10 by Mark Da very effective and well shot crime noir from the 50s. as a bostonian, i did enjoy the faux boston sets but i kept watching for the nice tight plot.
User Review - 8/10 by Leah AGreat mystery movie wrapped in a noir blanket! Lot's of nice touches in this one. It follows the cop trying to crack the case, as opposed to the guy getting screwed as is typical of noirs. The cop is of course KHAAAAAAAAN! and as a latin american, faces mild racism, and he uses solid forensic methods in trying to crack the case. "CSI:1950", watch it.
