In the days leading up to July 4, 1776, Continental Congressmen John Adams and Benjamin Franklin coerce Thomas Jefferson into writing the Declaration of Independence as a delaying tactic as they try to persuade the American colonies to support a resolution on independence. As George Washington sends depressing messages describing one military disaster after another, the businessmen, landowners and slave holders in Congress all stand in the way of the Declaration, and a single "nay" vote will forever end the question of independence. Large portions of spoken and sung dialog are taken directly from the letters and memoirs of the actual participants.

Newport This Week (RI)Loren KingIt's just one of many sobering moments in a musical that effectively counters lighter moments with gravitas.

User ReviewStephen SFeeney!!! This movie commands respect, not because we watched it in Miss Karen's class, but because its hilarious and historical, love it, love it, love it.
User ReviewChris MWithout a doubt one of my most favorite movies. It's takes place during one of the most important historical times in the USA. The creation of the 'Declaration Of Independance'. It's also a musical. Movies like these and older musicals just aren't made in Hollywood anymore. If you're not a reader of history, use this film like cliffnotes and catch up on a time in history that effects us all. ~C
User Reviewi just dont know why anymore hA fantastic experience combining historical accuracy with wit and humor.
User ReviewGina SProbably the most quoted film in my family. Funny, moving and patriotic - a great package, and some memorable songs too. William Daniels will always be my John Adams. In-cred-ible. I'll continue to watch it over and over.
