Jean-François Balmer was born in 1946 in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. Balmer spent his youth in the village of Valangin and then to Lausanne. After commercial studies, to which he devotes less time to declaiming texts and play imaginary characters, he decided at the age of 23 to start her studies of dramatic art at the Conservatoire d'art dramatique de Paris. He won a first accessit in 1973, in the promotion of Daniel Mesguich and Jacques Weber. Isabelle Adjani, Francis Huster and Jacques Villeret are part of her classmates at the Conservatory. He is also a student at the cours Florent. In this same year, 1973, he won his first role under the leadership of Yves Boisset in the film, R.A.S., and began a long career in film, theatre and television. He is the husband of the director Françoise Petit-Balmer.
