In the late nineteenth century Paris, Briton Charles Swann, a man of wealth and culture, runs among the social set. That life is threatened when he falls in love with Odette de Crécy, a courtesan, that love all consuming in that he thinks about how he can be with her when they aren't together. He also despises himself for loving her to the extent he does in knowing that if that love is ever destroyed, he won't be able to survive the emotional pain. He is also made quite aware that if he does marry Odette, whose services he pays for while he allows her to continue with her life, he will lose his social position as most will not be able to welcome her into their house. The wealthy Verudins may be the exceptions as they are considered vulgar and gauche despite their wealth, they who have their own choice for Odette, a man named de Forcheville. The other other exception is Charles' old friend, the Baron de Charlus, who introduced the two to each other. The Baron's support for Charles regardless of what he ends up doing is because he has already reconciled himself to his own socially taboo life, that of a homosexual with a penchant for younger men.

User Reviewj tThere could never be a full film treatment of Proust's masterpiece, but this film treatment of one small part of it is brilliant. It is without a doubt one of the best films I have ever screened. Irons was brilliant as Charles Swann. I cannot imagine anyone else who could have played the part better. Muti was perfect as Odette, and Alain Delon was Charlus incarnate. If you love Proust, you really owe it to yourself to screen this film. The sets, costumes, and outside shots were brilliant, too. I think it is a classic film that is very underrated and deserves a lot more critical attention. Five BIG Stars!!!

User ReviewKathy TJust watched this---I think it captures cinematically what Proust was doing in his novel. Interesting film.
User ReviewCJ CAlthough rather slow, Schlondorff's vision of Proust's work is great, and the period is magnificently captured! Jeremy Irons and Ornella Muti, plus Alain Delon as Charlus!
User ReviewMichael CJeremy Irons, Ornella Muti, Alain Delon, Fanny Ardant - a fantastic actor ansamble! This film is much more live and interesting than another film on Prousts's novel "Time regained". And once again- Proust's novel is not for everybody! Some like it, the majority - not really. So the plot of the film is also special. I enjoyed it. Jeremy Irons is great as Swann - perfect cast! I didn't like Ornella Muti really as Odette. Alain Delon is great (John Malkovich plays his character in "Time regained") Fanny Ardant is awesome, but too little of her in the film.
User ReviewPrivate Ul like it? Yes! I like Odette, her character.
User ReviewChristina SWell, I have read the book, and the only thing that lifts this monster is Delon being cast as de Charlus - a stroke of genius!
