Movie Reviews

Blu-ray.com - 8/10 by Brian Orndorf Morelli finds humor, horrors, and an enormous amount of neuroses in this frequently funny dark comedy.
One Guy's Opinion - 8/10 by Frank Swietek A convoluted comic brain-teaser that aims to delight but doesn't possess the wit needed to pull the trick off. Sporadically amusing but too often pedestrian.
Los Angeles Times - 7/10 by Justin Chang Is there a point to all these cheeky meta-shenanigans? Not really. Yet it’s hard not to share Morelli’s delight in the possibilities of an impossible story structure, and if the final work feels inevitably uneven, that’s less a flaw than a feature — a testament to the visual and tonal distinctiveness of the movie’s individual parts.
Village Voice - 6/10 by Abby Garnett The characters emerge through disorganized happenstance, but come across more as inventions than people.
National Post - 6/10 by Chris Knight Zoom is three Canadian movies for the price of one, which just about makes economic sense. Individually they're not much, but they add up to something entertaining if a touch uneven.
Globe and Mail - 6/10 by Johanna Schneller It left me meh. It's all situation, no character.
Georgia Straight - 6/10 by Ken Eisner The novelty of having a story told three different ways wears off fairly soon, as it dawns that this story, though visually stimulating throughout, was never really worth telling.
The Hollywood Reporter - 6/10 by John DeFore There's no way for all this to resolve that isn't fairly absurd. But Morelli's light touch generally keeps the goofiness from becoming tiresome, especially given the help of some quirktronica compositions by Kid Koala on the soundtrack.
Variety - 6/10 by Guy Lodge Morelli and tyro scribe Matt Hansen unpack this Charlie Kaufman-lite premise with more cleverness than wit, struggling particularly to find the right racy tone for various erotic interludes — but the part-toon pic’s neatly collapsing structure and pop-art flourishes ensure it’s never dull.
El Universal - 6/10 by Jorge Ayala Blanco A hyperhybrid adventure that reaches perfection by mixing cartoon techniques at an adult level. [Full review in Spanish]
NYC Movie Guru - 6/10 by Avi Offer An intriguing, Kaufmanesque premise that's poorly executed. It's tedious, dull and exhausting instead of being a wildly entertaining mind-f*ck like The Science of Sleep or Inception.
The Playlist - 5/10 by Ally Johnson There is an interesting film buried in Zoom, and it’s one to seek out if you’re a fan of more daring visual choices in film. It’s just a shame that the script couldn’t have matched the direction and visuals in its intriguing approach to world building.
