User ReviewSteve WZatoichi's cane sword is as iconic to his character as much as Indy's whip or Batman's utility belt. After defending himself from thugs, an older sword maker tells Zatoichi that his sword has reached its peak. If he uses it one more time, it'll snap. Zatoichi realizes he's going to have to change his lifestyle, and decides to become a full time masseur now that his sword is useless. But when a crime boss puts his thumb down on the town, Zatoichi must do what he does best, sword or no sword. Featuring a cool dream sequence that lets you really get into the mind of our hero, Zatoichi's Cane Sword is a nice halfway point in the series.
User ReviewWilliam WZatoichi's Cane Sword is another awesome typical Zatoichi film in every way i.e., adorable comedy, pleasant storytelling, crazy fight scenes, and a brilliant performance by Shintaro Katsu.
User ReviewLuke BZatoichi continues on his quest to give up his life of killing. This time he gets a helping hand when a blacksmith tells him that his sword is on it's last legs, and good for only one more kill. This inspires Zatoichi to give up his sword and work exclusively as a masseuse. Zatoichi without a sword may not sound appealing, but it forces the director to find tension in other aspects, such as the gambling scenes. You can probably guess (with 11 more films in his series to come) that Zatoichi hasn't quite quit just yet, but it's the journey that leads him back to the sword that is enthralling. Yet another fantastic film that hits all the right Zatoichi notes.
User ReviewBJ WI really, really enjoyed this one. The tone, Zatoichi's personality and attitude, the humor, everything in this one just worked for me.
