EmanuelLevy.Com - 7/10 by Emanuel LevyRichard (Gandhi) Attenborough made his feature directorial debut with this mildly interesting episodic chronicle of the young Winston Churchill, played by three actors
TIME Magazine - 6/10 by Jay CocksSince Young Winston attempts to be a kind of vest-pocket spectacle, there are also a couple of the battles in which he fought (a set-to in the Sudan, a Boer skirmish). Attenborough stages them with all the fury of a grade school recess.
Variety - 6/10 by Variety StaffBoth a brilliant artistic achievement and a fascinating, highly enjoyable film -- a combination not always obtained.
User Review - 10/10 by Andrew DThis film is about the life of a young Winston Churchill. Based on his book written during his 'wilderness years', 'My Early Life'. It starts with him as a boy and catalogues his relationship with his father and mother, Lord and Lady Randolph Churchill. As he gets older he then joins the army and the film contains some fantastic battle scenes including the "last great cavalry charge of the Empire" and also his escape from the Boars. A magnificent film, but I am biased when it comes to all things Winston.
User Review - 8/10 by Timothy MSurprisingly very good. I assumed it had fallen into obscurity for a reason - not so. While it's evident to see that Attenborough is already trying to be David Lean, a parish he wouldn't enter until Gandhi a decade later, this works wonderfully. I think if you can stage a grand epic biopic and propel it in such a way that it doesn't feel overlong, you've won. I think with biopics you've either got to have a great narrative or a great character - this falls into the category of the latter. Churchill himself is fascinating, even if the film overall really feels like Churchill Begins (it ends with him lighting what is presumably his first cigar. Then he jumps off a building and flies into the night.) Good cast as well - Simon Ward really does carry the film, which is another pleasant surprise, and Anne Bancroft's work here is really top-notch.
User Review - 8/10 by Stuart KAfter making his directorial debut with Oh! What a Lovely War (1969), Richard Attenborough followed it up with this epic adventure about England's most famous Prime Minister in his early years, from his 1930 autobiography My Early Life: A Roving Commission. It makes for a good film, mixing British aristocracy, heroics in the battlefield and entry into politics. It has an all star cast mixing drama with a little dry wit too. This tells the story of Winston Churchill (Simon Ward), or rather his early life and his rise to school, which was tough, especially under his strict headmaster (Robert Hardy), and how the death of his father Lord Randolph Churchill (Robert Shaw) affected him deeply. But, he remained close to his Anglo-American mother Jeanette Jerome (Anne Bancroft), and Churchill ended up as a cavalry officer in India and the Sudan, where he ends up serving under Lord Kitchener (John Mills), and then his travels to South Africa to fight in the Second Boer War, and Churchill's subsequent capture and escape to Portuguese East Africa, and then his entry into politics at the age of 25. You couldn't tell Churchill's life in one film, but his early years make for an entertaining watch, with Attenborough getting the best from his cast, and even Ward manages to do the great man justice, and has a bit of fun along the way. But, the appearances from greats like Anthony Hopkins, Ian Holm, Edward Woodward, Patrick Magee, John Woodvine, Norman Rossington and Jane Seymour compliment the film.
User Review - 8/10 by Grant SGood biopic on the child- and young adult-hood of Winston Churchill. Covers his school years, army years (incl the Battle of Omdurman), Boer War escapades and his initial election to Parliament. Very interesting - he was certainly driven and lived an eventful life! Also shows the influence of his father and mother. Solid direction by Richard Attenborough, directing his second movie (third was to be A Bridge Too Far, five years later). Good performances from Simon Ward and Anne Bancroft. Also features an early-career Anthony Hopkins as David Lloyd George.
User Review - 8/10 by Ken TThis is a strange epic biopic, in that it respects the subject, but also revels in the ironic touch. While not a great film, in part due to some spotty narration, I enjoyed its depth and willingness to treat its subject in an unheroic, but admirable way. As usual, Robert Shaw was excellent and Jack Hawkins is good even when he doesn't have a line of dialogue.
User Review - 6/10 by Paul DAttenborough makes a very good job portraying the lesser known years of Churchill, in his own words, although omisions are made. It can sometimes feel long, but can be a rewarding watch.
User Review - 6/10 by Geoff PA fairly good film version of Churchill's younger years. The sequences in the Sudan and South Africa are particularly fine, and some good performances. Ward actually looking and acting like a young Churchill helps also.
