Twenty-one year old Sammy Smalls has self-esteem issues. She hides behind her frumpy clothes and the slight limp she sustained from a childhood illness. She works in a dead end job as an undercover shoplifter detector at a Big Apple Food Town, her boss Dirk who has his own brand of vigilante justice for the shoplifters. And she considers her parents, although loving in their own unique way, not good role models for her. She doesn't like people touching her in an emotional manner, the ticklish feeling she gets from such being yet another thing behind which she hides. As a result, she is sexually inexperienced. However, she does have a crush on Eugene Zaslavsky, a busker musician who performs outside her supermarket. Each considers the other a friend, but their attempt to take the friendship into a sexual realm results in utter disaster. Although they vow to remain friends, Eugene won't sleep with her again due to her sexual inexperience. So Sammy goes on an expedition for advice and sexual experience from whomever and where ever she can find it, except from Eugene. Eugene, not fully realizing it, also has self-image issues with which he must comes to terms before he can be a true friend and possibly more to Sammy.
Leave your thoughts about Year of the Carnivore.
Toronto StarPeter HowellA decidedly quirky yet endearing comedy that wears its Juno crush like a hickey -- and I mean that in a good way.
Jam! MoviesJim SlotekAll in all, there's a sweetness to The Year of the Carnivore that survives its flaws. It is not successful as a comedy in the sense of there being a lot of laughs. But it is an interesting and different character portrait.
Globe and MailRick GroenAny picture with a legitimate claim as a good sex comedy is obliged to be (a) sexy and (b) comic. If neither, then what's left?
User ReviewNorman FCristin Milioti is the cutest thing on earth.
User ReviewDavid WChristin Milioti is great as Sammy Smalls. She survived cancer as a child and has a bad leg. She's in love with Eugene and he's into her to but when they sleep together, her body issues get in the way causeing him to feel like less of a men. Both go on a quest of sexual discovery to learn to what's important in a relationship and the difference between sex and love. Movies like this are why I love indie movies!
User ReviewAshley Tremind me never to shoplift at Big Apple Food Town
User ReviewAlanna HI wouldn't call it totally enthralling. But it was endearing and adorable in a weird quirky sense. And goodness knows I love the quirky-ness of everything. Kudos to Sook-Yin Lee and her Directorial Debut (at least, I think it is). I loved the plot and the dialogue. It was different and certainly original. Worth a watch, but like I said at first, it wasn't incredibly enthralling, so don't be surprised if it drags on a bit and you get a tad bored. Try and watch it all the way through though ^_^
User ReviewDead AGross, absurd, and hilarious comedy about sex.
User ReviewAdam L. Dwhat starts out as a cute quirky comedy about a crippled nerd, slooowly moves to point where we find our heroine trying to find love and deal with her inexperience with sexual matters. She deals with a guy that doesnt know she exsists and typical parents that are clueless and still try to control here and what she does in her life. there are ute scenes and funny bits but over all its drags and after a while you don't really care what happenes to our nerdly girl.
User ReviewConor BNot funny nor sexy, nor romantic. Just boring.
