Herald Sun (Australia)Leigh PaatschA comprehensive cinematic chronicle of the extraordinary life, times and art of the late Australian painter Brett Whiteley is long overdue. This exemplary documentary has made the wait absolutely worthwhile.
Adelaide ReviewDavid 'Mad Dog' BradleyIt's a wonderfully vivid study of a controversial guy who, just for once, changed everything.
Sydney Morning HeraldSandra HallThe result is an absorbing portrait, marred only by Bogle's decision to use actors in a series of dramatic reconstructions.
Daily Telegraph (Australia)Vicky RoachPhotographs, archival interviews and rare footage provide tantalising glimpses of the man who has become almost indistinguishable from the myth.
The AustralianStephen RomeiWhiteley's art was landmark, and remains important. The life the artist lived doesn't change that. When this documentary considers the art and the artist, and blends the two into one complex life, it is at its best.
Impulse GamerDamien StrakerAn informative summary and one that is stimulating to look upon.
LimelightLynden BarberThis is a major documentary that deserves to be seen by anyone in Australia with even a passing interest in art.
User ReviewWayne MWhiteley is an illuminating look at an icon of Australian art. This documentary gave me a complete feel for the man and the artist in a thorough and artistic way. There is no narration and no talking heads, rather an organic feel with clips of the man and quotes from him. Some in his own voice and some read by actors. Whiteley was a candle that burnt far too briefly. He gave so much joy to the world and still does. And yet his life ended far too early in tragic circumstances. If you are interested in great Australian lives then I totally recommend this fine documentary.
