Birger Broman, a newly graduated teacher comes to a small rural school as a substitute-teacher. While the ordinary teacher, Brunell, is at the hospital, Birger moves in with Brunell's wife, with whom he has a brief love-affair. And the new measures he introduces at the school, gives him enemies among the citizens of the small village, who prefers the traditional teachings and old-fashioned ways of the ordinary teacher....
